Submit nominations for annual diversity awards

November 4 is the deadline to submit nominations to the Institutional Office of Equity and Inclusion for the Presidential Stronger as One Diversity Awards. Nomination categories include University faculty, staff, students, members of the Board of Trustees, and Rochester community organizations. The awards recognize those who have supported the five institutional equity, diversity, and inclusion priorities and who have helped to create a welcoming and inclusive environment at the University and in the Rochester community. What happens if your circadian rhythm is out of whack?

New research coauthored by Brian Altman, an assistant professor of biomedical genetics, shows an important molecular link between lung tumor growth and disrupted circadian rhythms.

Identity theft resources

Roughly 47 percent of US adults have experienced some sort of identity fraud. The more proactive you are in safe cyber practices (changing passwords regularly, monitoring credit and reports), the more you mitigate your risk. In the event you fall victim, www.identitytheft.gov is a helpful resource to report identity theft and put a recovery plan in action. University IT offers additional tips to keep your cyber security in check here.

Find research opportunities, resources during Undergraduate Research Week

Join the Office for Undergraduate Research for Undergraduate Research Week, October 24–28. Find a full week of research-related information sessions that span a variety of topics and disciplines to help you learn how to start your research and what opportunities and resources are available at the University. The week culminates in the Undergraduate Research Fair on Friday, October 28, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in Feldman Ballroom, Douglass Commons. Representatives from various departments will be in attendance and ready to talk with students about research opportunities.

Attend the Language Fair

The Language Center hosts a Language Fair on Tuesday, October 25, in the Feldman Ballroom from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Learn about language learning opportunities at the University for spring 2023.

Nominations open for the Singer Family Prize for Excellence in Secondary School Teaching

Members of the senior class in the College have the opportunity to recognize and honor a high school teacher who significantly influenced them by submitting a nomination for the Singer Prize for Excellence in Secondary School Teaching. Four teachers will be selected from the nominees; the winning teachers will be acknowledged in a ceremony in May. The winners and their schools will also receive a financial prize. Nominations may be completed online or emailed to collegedean@UR.rochester.edu and are due December 16.

October 23–29 is Spiritual Care Week. Visit the Medical Center’s Interfaith Chapel during an open house on Wednesday, October 26, from 10 a.m. to noon for some light refreshments.

‘Introduction to AR/VR’ workshop

The Ain Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation has partnered with Mary Ann Mavrinac Studio X for the next session of the workshop series, “Build Your Entrepreneurial Foundation Block-by-Block.”

Waleed Nadeem ’23 and Liam O’Leary ’23 are leading “Introduction to AR/VR” on Wednesday, October 26, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Studio X. This interactive workshop will help innovators learn about how they can use XR technologies to implement their ideas.

Scare Fair 2022: ‘Spooky Cinema in the Libraries’

Celebrate horror on the big screen at this year’s Scare Fair in Rush Rhees Library, Friday, October 28, from 1 to 4 p.m. Scare Fair is one of the only opportunities during the academic year to go to the top of the Rush Rhees Library tower. You’ll have to complete the library’s scavenger hunt first, which will take you through twists and turns to places in the library you never knew existed. Tower tour and scavenger hunt tickets will be available for the first 300 participants and are first-come, first-served, and weather-dependent. Accessible scavenger hunt options will be available. Other attractions include free fall snacks, therapy dogs in the Welles-Brown Room, games, a Halloween costume contest, and prizes.

Annual pumpkin launch competition

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers student chapter hosts its annual pumpkin launch competition on Friday, October 28, at the Wilson Quad. Test launches begin at 1 p.m., followed by the competition from 2 to 5 p.m.
