Department of Defense partnership will pave the way for therapeutic advances for chronic diseases

A grant from the US Department of Defense will help the Center for Health + Technology develop novel outcomes measures for use in therapeutic studies involving a range of chronic diseases. These tools will provide a platform for patients to give insight into the merit of promising therapies during clinical trials.

UR Procurement (P2P) Marketplace gets an upgrade

The UR Procurement Marketplace (Jaggaer) is upgraded three times a year with the next upgrade scheduled for Friday, November 4, from 9 p.m. through Sunday, November 6. It is expected that this release will have no noticeable end-user impacts.


AWARDS AND HONORS

Rochester faculty are leaders in their fields who are regularly recognized with regional, national, and international awards and honors for their professional contributions to research, scholarship, education, and community engagement. Read about their recent achievements.

  • Laura Calvi, a professor of medicine and a leader at the Wilmot Cancer Institute, has been voted president-elect of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.
  • Anaar Desai-Stephens, an assistant professor of ethnomusicology at the Eastman School of Music and an affiliate faculty member of the Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies, has received the American Association of University Women’s American Postdoctoral Research Leave Fellowship.
  • Ray Dorsey, the David M. Levy Professor in Neurology, received the 2022 Tom Isaacs Award for his Parkinson’s disease research that has led to multiple levels of action in combating the disease.
  • Nadine Grimm, an assistant professor of linguistics, has been named the recipient of the Linguistic Society of America’s 2023 Bloomfield Book Award for her book A Grammar of Gyeli.
  • Aaron Hughes, the Philip S. Bernstein Chair of Jewish Studies and Deans Professor of the Humanities in the Department of Religion and Classics, has been awarded the Fulbright Distinguished Chair in North American Studies at Carleton University in Ottawa for the 2022­–23 academic year.
  • Rose Kennedy, an assistant professor of chemistry, has been named a 2022 Packard Fellow by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.
  • Duncan Moore, the vice provost for entrepreneurship and the Rudolf and Hilda Kingslake Professor of Optical Engineering, received the Legacy Award from the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers.
  • Kerry O’Banion, director of the Medical Science Training Program at the School of Medicine and Dentistry and a professor of neuroscience, has received the 2022 MD-PHD National Association Dr. Bert Shapiro Award.
  • Ronald Schwartz, a professor of medicine, of cardiology, and of imaging sciences, received the Distinguished Teacher and Clinician Award from the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology.

FOR STUDENTS

‘Relax and Restore’ yoga class tonight

Join Lucinda Snyder, the owner of Peak Flow and one of the Mindful University Project’s Koru mindfulness instructors, for a “Relax and Restore” yoga class today, November 3, from 6 to 7 p.m. in Room 202, Spurrier Hall. This practice is open to all University students at all levels of experience. Yoga mats, bolsters, and props will be provided. Register for class here. Pet therapy pups

Pet some therapy dogs and leave with stress-relieving giveaways such as lavender sachets, quote cards to hang up in your dorm, and information about upcoming events at the next PAWS for Stress Relief event. Events are open to all undergraduate and graduate students and take place in the Goergen Athletic Center on Monday, November 7, from 6 to 7:15 p.m. and at the Eastman Student Living Center on Thursday, November 10, from 6 to 7:15 p.m.

First-year student well-being listening sessions

In order to gain a deeper understanding of students’ experiences and overall well-being, the UHS Health Promotion Office is conducting listening sessions for first-year students. These small group, peer-to-peer discussions will give students an opportunity to express their thoughts and share personal experiences about a variety of well-being topics. The information gathered from these sessions will provide in-depth knowledge to help develop services, and create intentional collaborations and environmental level changes on campus to support students. Listening sessions are facilitated by Peer Health Advocate interns. Sessions are an hour long and one participant per session will win a raffle prize. Self-defense workshops for graduate student women

The Graduate Student Wellness Committee is hosting free self-defense seminars for women graduate students on Saturday, November 12, and Saturday, December 3, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. This seminar will cover the psychological and physical aspects of self-defense by teaching beginner-friendly Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques in a collaborative training environment. The techniques in the session employ leverage and timing, so anyone of any age or athletic ability can make them work against larger opponents. No previous martial arts experience is required. Registration is required.

Adopt a fire hydrant this winter

Are you a student living off-campus in the 19th Ward or PLEX neighborhoods and looking for a way to support your neighborhood? Join the 19th Ward Neighborhood Association and the Neighborhood Ambassadors and adopt a fire hydrant for the winter. Volunteers with the Adopt a Fire Hydrant program, run by the city of Rochester, clear the path from the hydrant to the street and make sure the hydrant is free of ice and snow in a three-foot radius at all times. Register here for the program and fill in this form to be registered in the Neighborhood Ambassador Program.

Translational Research Day

Celebrate the innovative research that has been developed through Clinical and Translational Science Institute-supported pilot awards, research grants, and training programs on Friday, November 11, beginning at 9:30 a.m. in Sarah Flaum Atrium, Medical Center. Learn about the work Rochester researchers are doing to facilitate translational research by turning observations in the laboratory, clinic, and community into interventions that improve the health of individuals and communities.
