What the midterm elections tell us about the stability of US democracy

With the United States midterm elections just around the corner, Gerald Gamm, a professor of political science and of history; Gretchen Helmke, the Thomas H. Jackson Distinguished University Professor; and James Johnson, a professor of political science, discuss political hyperpolarization, what happens when losers don’t concede elections, and the outlook for US democracy.

Speaking of elections, check the Today’s Updates section for resources to help ensure you can exercise your right to vote in this year’s elections.

TODAY’S UPDATES

Gloria Culver to step down as dean of the School of Arts & Sciences

After nine years in the position, including one year as interim dean, Gloria Culver will step down as dean of the School of Arts & Sciences effective July 1, 2023. With the University’s new strategic plan set to launch this spring, Culver, and Provost David Figlio mutually agreed that the best way for the School of Arts & Sciences to move forward over the next five to 10 years would be with long-term consistency in leadership.

In marking this transition, Figlio expressed appreciation for Culver’s leadership. “In the short time we’ve worked together, Gloria has impressed me with her views about the opportunities facing the School of Arts & Sciences,” he said. “Gloria’s prioritization of the well-being of our students, staff, and faculty has helped guide the school through challenging times and positions the school for still greater successes in the years to come.”

The University will initiate a national search to identify the next dean of the school. Figlio will name a search committee in the coming weeks.

Medical Center implements On-Demand Video Visits statewide

The Medical Center has expanded its reach with the rollout of On-Demand Video Visits, available to all UR Medicine patients aged 18 and over who reside in New York state. The service connects patients anywhere in the state to a Digital Health Team comprised of Medical Center providers. UR Medicine aims to “get patients in the front door”—both physically and virtually—by offering a suite of digital tools like online scheduling, eCheck-In, and On-Demand Video Visits that increase access and ease of care for both patients and clinicians. Find more information on the Medical Center’s intranet (Active Directory login may be required).

Resources to vote and make your voice heard

Voting is one of the key activities you can take part in to contribute to our nation’s democratic process—and it’s an important way to make your voice heard on both local and national issues. University faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to review the following resources as the US midterm elections approach to help ensure you can exercise your right to vote.

Voting on Election Day
The national organization VOTE411.org is a safe and efficient way to check your voting information. Launched by the League of Women Voters Education Fund in October 2006, VOTE411.org is a “one-stop-shop” for election-related information for every state.

Most polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Election Day, Tuesday, November 8. You can check your polling location on VOTE411, or, for New York State residents, through the New York State Board of Elections website.

Early voting
For Rochester-area residents, many early voting sites have been established and have hours throughout the weekend and up to Election Day. Find hours and locations for Monroe County; Ontario County; and Wayne County.
