Erin Martin Kane named interim vice president for communications

Erin Martin Kane, who currently serves as associate vice president for marketing communications and donor engagement in University Advancement, has been appointed interim vice president for communications, effective November 20. She succeeds Elizabeth Stauderman, who is stepping down in December. The University is preparing to launch a nationwide search for the vice president for marketing and communications position.

Meet and greet, master class with sound editor Rob McIntyre

Rob McIntyre, an Emmy award-winning supervising sound editor and sound designer, whose credits include Teen Titans Go!, Kung Fu Panda, and Voltron, will be at Rochester this week. Join McIntyre for a meet and greet today, November 9, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Gavett Hall, Room 305. He will also host a master class on Thursday, November 10, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Computer Studies Building, Room 616. If you would like to present your sound design project at the master class, email Stephen Roessner.

Self-defense workshops for graduate student women

The Graduate Student Wellness Committee is hosting free self-defense seminars for women graduate students on Saturday, November 12, and Saturday, December 3, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The seminar will cover the psychological and physical aspects of self-defense by teaching beginner-friendly Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques in a collaborative training environment. The techniques in the session employ leverage and timing, so anyone of any age or athletic ability can make them work against larger opponents. No previous martial arts experience is necessary. Registration is required.

Supervisor Series webinar on recognizing stress, anxiety, and depression

Managers or employees in supervisory roles can join Well-U and UR Medicine EAP on Wednesday, November 16, at noon EST to learn about the prevalence of stress, depression, and anxiety in the workplace. Learn what you can do as a supervisor to help a struggling employee. Register here.

Open enrollment ends November 15

Action is required during open enrollment for many of the University’s benefits including changing your health care plan, electing to contribute to a Health Savings Account or Flexible Spending Account, and electing to increase or decrease your coverage. You have until Tuesday, November 15, to enroll or make changes to your benefits. LiDA fall colloquium on technology and socio-emotional learning

The next event in the Center for Learning in the Digital Age’s (LiDA) fall colloquium series, “Managing and Leveraging Technology to Support Socio-Emotional Learning,” takes place today, November 9, at 3:30 p.m. EST via Zoom. This event will include brief presentations from a few “conversation starters” who will share their perspectives on the topic, followed by facilitated breakout room discussions where all participants can share and discuss their own experiences and thoughts. Field hockey hosts NCAA tournament matchup

The University’s field hockey team was selected for the 2022 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament and will host the University of New England in a matchup at Fauver Stadium in the Brian Prince Athletic Complex today, November 9, at 3 p.m. Tickets are cash only and will be sold at Fauver Stadium beginning 90 minutes prior to the start of the contest. Adult admission is $5; student, senior, and youth admission is $3; children aged 2 and under are free. Admission is free for undergraduate students from the College and Eastman School of Music with their University ID, courtesy of Wilson Commons Student Activities.

You can also follow the game via live video stream for free or track the contest through live in-game statistics.

Veterans Day run, pinning ceremony

The University’s annual Veterans Day run takes place Thursday, November 10, starting at 6 a.m. at Fauver Stadium. Find more information on how to register and other details on the run, which can be completed in person or virtually. The run is presented by the University’s NROTC units and Veterans Alliance.

On Friday, November 11, the University will hold its annual Veterans Day pinning ceremony from 7:30 to 9 a.m. in the Hawkins-Carlson Room, Rush Rhees Library. The ceremony recognizes veterans from all branches of the US services and their families.

‘Changing Perspectives Through the Arts’ event

The Department of Health Humanities and Bioethics presents Dalton LaBarge as part of the “Changing Perspectives Through the Arts” series. “Kaionnì:ke Karì:ware: On Wampum and the Paths of Healing” explores how wampum are a living practice; an intersection of material craft, storytelling, and the continued restoration of what it means to heal as individuals and communities. Lieder, piano concert at Eastman

Mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter and Kristian Bezuidenhout ’01E, ’04E (MM) present an evening of Lieder and piano pieces on Friday, November 11, at 7:30 p.m. in Kilbourn Hall, Eastman School of Music. Every “Eastman Presents” concert qualifies the University community for discounted tickets. Visit eastmantheatre.org to establish an account using your University email address. For faculty and staff, use access code ESMURID20; for students, the code is STUDENT50.

Native American Heritage Celebration Day at MAG

Attend Native American Heritage Celebration Day at Memorial Art Gallery in collaboration with Friends of Ganondagan Program Director Jeanette Jemison (Mohawk, Snipe Clan). Enjoy free museum admission, live dances and demonstrations with Bill Crouse (Seneca, Hawk Clan), storytelling with Perry Ground (Turtle Clan member of the Onondaga Nation), display tables, history, culture, celebration, and more. The event takes place Saturday, November 13, from noon to 4 p.m.
