Updates to the University’s strategic plan

The University’s Strategic Planning Committee has been working over the last several months to develop a path forward for the institution. Thanks to invaluable input from the University community, including students, faculty, staff, and alumni, great progress has been made on the plan, which will be shared in early 2023. As this work continues, you are invited to visit the University’s updated Strategic Plan website to learn more about the five strategic goals that will help us realize the University’s vision, as well as an updated timeline and a way to provide feedback and ask questions through the online submission form.

Apply for an AS&E Course Development Grant

Consider applying for one of the grants that support instructors in the development of AS&E courses:

  • Teaching Innovation Grant from the Teaching Center
  • Community-Engaged Course Development Grant from the Center for Community Engagement

The shared deadline for these grants is Tuesday, November 15. Learn about the available grants and how to apply.

Deadline extended for community health mini-grant

Rochester researchers who are pursuing community health partnerships can apply for mini-grants supported by the Clinical and Translational Science Institute and Center for Community Health & Prevention. The one-time grants of up to $2,000 address barriers to community partnerships, such as transportation, childcare, meeting space rental, and refreshments. Apply by Monday, November 28.

University veterans honored at pinning ceremony today

The University hosts its annual Veterans Day pinning ceremony today, November 11, from 7:30 to 9 a.m. in the Hawkins-Carlson Room, Rush Rhees Library. The ceremony honors veterans from all branches of the US services and their families.

Learn more about current events affecting Iranian women

Learn more about the current movement in Iran, in particular Iranian women who are fighting for their basic rights. “Let’s Stand with Iranians” takes place today, November 11, at 1 p.m. in the Computer Studies Building, Room 601, and via Zoom. This event is sponsored by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee, with additional support from the Graduate Student Association, Persian Student Association, and International Services Office.

Native American Heritage Celebration Day at MAG

Attend Native American Heritage Celebration Day at Memorial Art Gallery in collaboration with Friends of Ganondagan Program Director Jeanette Jemison (Mohawk, Snipe Clan). Enjoy free museum admission, live dances and demonstrations with Bill Crouse (Seneca, Hawk Clan), storytelling with Perry Ground (Turtle Clan member of the Onondaga Nation), display tables, history, culture, celebration, and more. The event takes place Sunday, November 13, from noon to 4 p.m.

Geographic Information Systems Day

On Wednesday, November 16, the River Campus Libraries invites you to participate in an annual international event that aims to spread awareness about Geographic Information Systems, mapping, and spatial thinking. This year’s event will focus on urban heat, which can contribute to heat exhaustion and respiratory illnesses. Be in Carlson Science and Engineering Library from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. to learn how to create maps that show the effects of higher temperatures on a city’s demographics. You can participate over Zoom or in person with light refreshments. Register here for the Zoom link.

Workshop on team building

Join the Ain Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation on Tuesday, November 15, at 4 p.m. in Genesee Hall, Room 325, for its next workshop, “Opposites Attract: Turning a Group of Strangers into a Team.” Attend this session to determine how your strengths can help you find potential partners, and learn how to maintain and grow working relationships along the way. Register online and contact the Ain Center with questions. If interested, take this personality test ahead of the event.

‘Roc Your Global Future’ conference

The University joins other colleges around the Rochester area as hosts of the virtual “Roc Your Global Future Conference” during International Education Week, Monday, November 14, through Thursday, November 17. Keynote speaker Jo Franco, CEO of JoClub, presents on Tuesday, November 15 at 6 p.m. EST. Sessions are open to study abroad returnees, University faculty and staff, and students looking to go abroad. Holiday market returns to the Medical Center

Jumpstart your holidays by shopping for fine art, jewelry, custom-engraved gifts, foods, and other handcrafted items from local artists and merchants on Friday, November 18, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Sarah Flaum Atrium, School of Medicine and Dentistry. Enjoy samples and take part in a prize drawing to benefit patient care initiatives throughout Strong Hospital.

Annual Bernard Guyer Lecture focuses on firearm violence and prevention

Garen Wintemute, a distinguished professor of emergency medicine and the Baker–Teret Chair in Violence Prevention at the University of California, Davis, is the keynote speaker for the 11th annual Bernard Guyer Lecture, happening virtually at noon EST on Friday, November 18. Wintemute, director of the Violence Prevention Research Program and the California Firearm Violence Research Center, will present “Firearm Violence: Where We Stand, What We Can Do.” Learn more and register for the event, presented in partnership with the Center for Community Health & Prevention, the Clinical & Translational Science Institute, and the Departments of Medicine, Public Health Sciences, and Pediatrics.

Health equity art contest for K–12 students

The new Office of Health Equity Research is hosting an art contest for local K–12 students to showcase what health equity looks like to them in their communities. Through the contest, the office hopes to spark enthusiasm and engage in meaningful conversations with students, parents, and teachers about specific areas of health inequity we can address through our research. Students can win cash prizes by submitting artwork by November 25.

Take a guided bus tour of High Acres Landfill

Students, faculty, and staff can sign up to take a guided bus tour of Waste Management’s High Acres Landfill on Friday, December 2. The local facility features a methane gas renewable energy plant that produces enough energy to power 9,000 homes. During the tour, you’ll

  • Learn about how the landfill was engineered to protect the air, water, soil, and environmental integrity of the surrounding area.
  • Meet the landfill’s unique workforce of falcons that help to control the seagull population naturally.
  • Get an inside look at the composting operation to which the University sends food waste and other organic materials.

The tour bus leaves from the back of Rush Rhees Library at 1 p.m. and returns at approximately 3 p.m. The tour is open to anyone, but seating is limited. Email Amy Kadrie to register.
