How does radiation travel through dense plasma?

A new study led by Suxing Hu, a distinguished scientist and group leader of the High-Energy-Density Physics Theory Group at the University’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) and an associate professor of mechanical engineering, and Philip Nilson, a senior scientist in the LLE’s Laser-Plasma Interaction group provides experimental data about how radiation travels through dense plasmas, which will help scientists to better understand planetary science and fusion energy.

Cheryl Bennett to retire as senior director of the Budget Office

Cheryl Bennett, the senior director of the Budget Office, will retire at the end of the current fiscal year, in the summer of 2023. After a nationwide search, Joshua Hummert has been named as successor effective November 21. Hummert brings a deep background in not-for-profit and higher education financial management, budgeting, and planning.

“I firmly believe that most CEOs would much rather not speak out on abortion, they would much rather not have to be taking these positions but they are being put in the middle,” says David Primo, the Ani and Mark Gabrellian Professor and a professor of political science and of business administration. “You are kind of in a damned if you do, damned if you don’t position in a lot of these cases. The question is: What do you do? I don’t think there are a lot of easy answers here for companies.”

Thanksgiving Break shuttles to airport and bus, train station

Complimentary shuttles will be available on select days to transport students to and from the airport and train and bus station. The Students’ Association Government has coordinated with the Transportation Office and Wilson Commons Student Activities to provide shuttles on Wednesday, November 23, and Sunday, November 27, for those traveling during the Thanksgiving Break. Research talk on moving beyond scale-driven learning

The Goergen Institute for Data Science presents “Mitigating Bias in Deep Neural Networks: Lessons from Continual Machine Learning, Medical Computer Vision, and Language Guided Scene Understanding” by Christopher Kanan, an associate professor of computer science. The research talk will be held in person today, November 18, from 2 to 3 p.m. in Wegmans Hall, Room 1400. You can also attend via Zoom.

Native American song and dance workshop

The “Unbroken Circle” represents the Circle of Life in which the Indigenous peoples of Turtle Island (North America) meet to dance, sing, tell stories and pass on their cultural heritage to those within the Circle. Eastman Community Music School presents “The Unbroken Circle,” a workshop on Native American song and dance, on Sunday, November 20, at 1:30 p.m. in Rettner Community Music Center, Messinger Hall.

Take a pause for gratitude

According to research conducted by the National Institutes of Health, UCLA, Columbia, Harvard, and Yale, a daily gratitude practice can positively change the molecular structure of the brain; boost happiness, productivity, energy, and immunity; and decrease stress and anxiety. Join a 15-minute virtual guided meditation during the Gratitude and Mindfulness Campaign on Monday, November 21, from noon to 12:15 pm EST.
