TODAY’S UPDATES

DPS holds holiday drive for two community organizations

The Department of Public Safety is hosting a holiday giving initiative this month to benefit the Rochester International Academy and the Bivona Child Advocacy Center.

“We decided to add the Rochester International Academy to our efforts after our department learned that the school had to shelve field trip plans because many of the students do not own winter boots,” says DPS Major Cindy Coates. The Rochester City School District school educates English-language learning students from war-torn countries. The Bivona Child Advocacy Center supports child abuse response, healing, and prevention through collaborative service, awareness, education, and leadership.

Until December 20, DPS is seeking donations of new children’s toys, winter clothing in child and young adult sizes, and winter boots to benefit the children and families who receive services at these two organizations. Find more information and drop-off locations here.

ROCHESTER IN THE NEWS

ASL advocates cheered a new bilingual program in LA. But its rollout has been rocky

NPR, December 12

The Milan Conference in 1880 declared that oral education was superior to sign education, saying that focusing on English would help Deaf and hard of hearing people integrate properly into hearing society. The effects of that declaration can be seen to this day, says Wyatte Hall, an assistant professor of public health sciences, of obstetrics and gynecology, of pediatrics, of neurology, and at the Center for Community Health and Prevention, who studies early childhood language experiences in Deaf communities. “In many ways, Deaf communities still suffer the consequences of that vote in 1880,” he said through an interpreter. “It’s entrenched in the medical system and in the educational system.”
