Scientists hit key milestone in fusion energy quest
Researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory’s (LLNL) National Ignition Facility (NIF) this week announced they have—for the first time—achieved ignition, a major milestone in the field of fusion energy. The announcement validates the laser-driven implosion techniques on which LLNL and a large community of researchers, including scientists at the University’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE), have closely collaborated for decades.
In addition to maintaining the Omega Laser Facility, one of only three unique, world-leading science facilities in the Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Nuclear Security Administration’s Inertial Confinement Fusion program, the LLE is LLNL’s principal partner and the largest DOE university-based program in the nation—educating and training scientists who are able to perform experiments at LLE before they scale the experiments on the NIF.
