TODAY’S UPDATES

Changes coming to Blackboard

On December 29, a number of changes will be coming to Blackboard including how the site is accessed (authentication), a significant makeover to the site’s navigation pages, and the use of accessibility features. No changes to courses or course functionality will occur—just the web page navigation surrounding the courses. Downtime for the update will be from 8 a.m. to noon EST on Thursday, December 29. Specifics will be communicated as the date approaches. Find more information, documentation, and videos here.

Make a gift by December 31

Behind every discovery, every achievement, every patient healed, and every opportunity are donors who make it all possible. Consider making your year-end charitable donation by December 31 to any area of the University that is important to you. The University also has a campus Food Pantry that can be restocked using both in-kind donations and charitable contributions. Gifts to these funds and many other priorities can be made through the #RochesterGives crowdfunding hub or through payroll deduction.

ISO closing early today

The International Services Office will close at 3 p.m. today, December 15.

Flags will be lowered for Somaly Teng

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered Thursday, December 22, for Somaly Teng, a financial counselor in the Registration and Insurance Management Department, who died on December 6. Teng joined the University staff in 2007.

FOR THE COMMUNITY

Entries now accepted for annual Art of Science Competition

With winter break fast approaching, what better time to start thinking about your entries for the annual Art of Science Competition? From January 1 through March 19, currently enrolled students, faculty, and staff can submit photographs, illustrations, visualizations, renderings, or posters showing an artistic representation of science, technology, engineering, math, and sustainability themes. Creativity and uniqueness are favored in the judging, as well as the ability of artists to convey the meaning of their work in terms understandable to a general audience.

Entries should be high-resolution jpegs (300 dpi, at least 3,000 pixels wide on the longest edge). Cash prizes of $1,000, $500, and $250 will be awarded to winning student entries. All other entries will be eligible for a People’s Choice Award of $250. Email artofsciencecontest@gmail.com with questions. Learn about last year’s winning entries here.

The event takes place from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, December 16, at the Gandhi Institute. All proceeds from the sale of the book for December will go toward the institute’s annual appeal campaign.
