In today’s issue:

  • Virtual sessions on the Social Security and international tax identification number processes are available for faculty, staff, and students

TODAY’S UPDATES

Social Security, international tax identification number information sessions for employees, students

To provide faculty and staff who employ international students with information about the Social Security and international tax identification number processes, the International Services Office will host virtual drop-in sessions to explain these processes and answer questions. The sessions will take place every Thursday from 2 to 3 p.m. EST beginning today, January 12, and will run through April 13. The sessions are designed to be informative and interactive and can be accessed here.

Similar information sessions will be held for students every Friday from 3 to 4 p.m. EST beginning January 12 and running through April 14. Students can access the virtual drop-in sessions here.

Flags will be lowered for Diane Viera

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered Tuesday, January 17, for Diane Viera, a project nurse for the Utilization Management Department, who died on December 28. Viera joined the University staff in 2014.


FOR STUDENTS

Study Zone program now enrolling

Located within the Learning Center in Dewey Hall, 1-160D, the Study Zone is a quiet, focused place to work. Students commit to spending at least three hours a week in the Study Zone and benefit from peer support in planning effective study sessions. By providing a productive location, personal support, and free snacks, this informal study location will help students get past common barriers to turn their academic goals into reality. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis. The program serves students in AS&E, the School of Medicine and Dentistry, Simon Business School, and Warner School of Education. Enroll here.

Applications open for the NSF Research Experience for Undergraduates on Computational Methods for Understanding Music, Media, and Minds

The National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates on Computational Methods for Understanding Music, Media, and Minds is accepting applications for summer 2023. Students in the program will work on projects in interdisciplinary research areas that combine artificial intelligence, music, statistics, and cognitive science—and will be mentored by faculty in computer science, brain and cognitive sciences, music theory, and public health. Students accepted into the program receive a $6,000 stipend, free on-campus housing, a meal stipend, and funding for travel to and from Rochester. Interested undergraduates should apply by January 29, 2023.

Program provides safer-sex supplies for students

FOR FACULTY AND STAFF

Supervisor Series: Using EAP in supervision

Improve your ability to recognize employees whose personal problems are adversely affecting performance. Join Well-U and UR Medicine EAP on Wednesday, January 18, from noon to 1 p.m. EST for a virtual workshop that will help you to use EAP as a productivity tool when addressing performance concerns. The training is for those in a supervisory or managerial role. Register here.

Intellectual Developmental Disabilities Research Center pilot project awards

The University’s Intellectual Developmental Disabilities Research Center has up to two available pilot project awards with a maximum budget of $75,000 per award. The selected project should pertain to one or more of the seven focus areas listed within the RFA. Funding is open to faculty across the University. Apply by Thursday, January 26.

New Well-U program on setting goals

With Well-U’s new “Goal-Setting Success” program, the lifestyle management team can help you set realistic objectives, find motivational tools that work, avoid obstacles, and achieve and sustain your accomplishments using a proven research-based behavioral change method. Register here to get started on Friday, January 27. A Zoom link will be sent once you have completed registration.

Tuition reimbursement reminder

If you are attending an outside school for the spring 2023 semester, you must submit your tuition reimbursement application to tuitionbenefits@ur.rochester.edu. The application can be found on the tuition benefits website. All applications must be received no later than 30 days after the start of the course.

Apply to the Geriatrics Faculty Scholars Program

The University of Rochester Aging Institute, the Division of Geriatrics and Aging, and the Finger Lakes Geriatric Education Center are now accepting applications for the 2023 Geriatric Faculty Scholars Program, open to junior and mid-career academic faculty from the School of Nursing and School of Medicine and Dentistry with an interest in aging who wish to spearhead program development through geriatric education within their school, program, division, or department. Apply by January 15 to advance your nursing career

Reimagine your nursing practice with an advanced degree from the School of Nursing. Apply by Sunday, January 15, for a summer 2023 start in a master’s, RN to BS to MS, Advanced Certificate, or Doctor of Nursing Practice program. University employees may receive full tuition coverage for select programs through the SON Tuition Grant. Contact the School of Nursing admissions office with questions about program or application requirements.
