Researchers look for link between air pollution and brain disease

Deborah Cory-Slechta, a professor of environmental medicine, of public health sciences, and of neuroscience, discusses findings from researchers trying to figure out how much, and to what extent, airborne contaminants are linked to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

‘Introduction to Figma’ entrepreneurial workshop

Join the Ain Center for its new workshop series, “Build Your Entrepreneurial Foundation Block-by-Block,” designed to help student innovators and entrepreneurs learn more about special tools, resources, approaches, and concepts that could help them with their projects and career paths.

The third edition of the “Block-by-Block series” takes place today, January 18, at 6 p.m. EST in Douglass Commons, Room 401, and is an introduction to Figma, a browser-based design software used on both Apple and PCs for graphic design, UX, UI, and more. Register online and contact the Ain Center with questions. Remember to bring your laptop.

Orientation leader applications due Friday

Applications for 2023–24 orientation leaders are due Friday, January 20 by 5 p.m. EST. The orientation leader role is a year-round paid job responsible for mentoring a cohort of incoming first-year and transfer students, as well as developing and leading virtual and in-person programs ahead of their arrival and during their first year on campus. Preparing for myURHR: Overview and timeline

A new series in @Rochester—“Preparing for myURHR”—will keep you updated about the new Workday Human Resources system replacing HRMS (PeopleSoft) in spring 2024. With just over a year from going live, and due to the broad impact of this project, it is important to understand the timeline and benefits of implementing myURHR. This week, take a closer look at why the University chose this new platform, and explore the project timeline.

myURHR will provide a modern technology platform that will eliminate manual processes, enable efficient digital workstreams, and support important HR initiatives like the new job structure that is part of the Career Path Modernization project.

Department of Psychiatry events honor Martin Luther King Jr.

In partnership with the Department of Neurology, the Department of Psychiatry presents “Past, Present, and Future: Rochester’s Civil Rights Journey Towards an Equitable Future,” during its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Week, this year dedicated to the memory of John Walker, a former adjunct associate professor in the department and a staunch advocate of civil rights and equitable health care. Register here to attend a virtual panel today, January 18, at noon on the present and future of Rochester in its journey toward civil rights and an equitable future. You can also register to attend a performance from Rochester’s MLK Choir and readings of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” on Friday, January 20, via Zoom.

Information sessions on TEAM master’s program

The master of science in technical entrepreneurship and management program (TEAM) is offered jointly by Simon Business School and the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences and is administered by the Ain Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. A multidisciplinary, engineering management degree, the program is designed for students with an engineering, science, or mathematics undergraduate degree, who wish to pursue a master’s level technical education in combination with business and leadership courses. ‘Promote Health. Prevent Cancer.’

Are you looking to make healthy lifestyle changes in 2023? “Promote Health. Prevent Cancer.,” a free eight-week interactive group program offered in partnership between the Center for Community Health & Prevention and Wilmot Cancer Institute, could be the right fit. Learn how what you eat and how much you move can affect your risk of cancer and other chronic diseases, and the small changes you can make to help improve your overall health and well-being. Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprise Summit

The University collaborated with Monroe County, the City of Rochester, the NY/NJ Minority Supplier Development Council, WXXI, and other community groups to support the Upstate New York 2023 Minority and Women-Owned Business Summit. Taking place Tuesday, January 24, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Memorial Art Gallery, the summit will focus on mentorship and financing. New year, new possibilities with ‘Imagining Possible FutURes’

The first “Imagining Possible FutURes” conversation of the year is planned for Wednesday, January 25, at 11 a.m. EST via Zoom. In this conversation, explore new possibilities in work in 2023 and how to find satisfaction and fulfillment on both sides of Elmwood. All members of the University faculty, staff, and students are welcome to attend. The conversation will be facilitated in a restorative circle format and offer space to share ideas, hopes, and goals in a supportive environment. The purpose is to encourage one another, make connections, and see what changes can be made today. Register to attend.

Fairbank Lecture Series talk with Richard Davis ’66

Richard Davis ’66 presents “My Work on the Iran Sanctions of 1979 and International Sanctions Against Russia Today” on Wednesday, January 25, as part of the Fairbank Lecture Series. A reception takes place at 5 p.m. followed by the lecture at 5:30 p.m. in the Hawkins-Carlson Room, Rush Rhees Library. Learn more and register.

Registration is open for Rochester’s pre-college programs, a way for high school-aged students to see if an interest could turn into a major or a career.
