Researchers identify neurons that ‘learn’ to smell a threat

Researchers at the Del Monte Institute for Neuroscience are finding new clues to how the olfactory sensory system aids in threat assessment and have found neurons that “learn” if a smell is a threat.

Flags will be lowered for Paul Brown

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered Tuesday, January 31, for Paul Brown, a staff accountant in the General Accounting Finance Department, who died on January 6. Brown joined the University staff in 2006.

Apply to be a Writing Fellow

Do you love writing? Do you want to learn how to help people from all disciplines improve their writing? Consider applying to be a Writing Fellow—the undergraduate tutors who assist students at any stage of the writing process. The Writing, Speaking, and Argument Program is recruiting current first years and sophomores to join WRTG 245: Advanced Writing and Peer Tutoring in the fall semester, and, ultimately, to be hired to work as peer writing tutors.

Study Abroad returnee welcome-back celebration 

If you studied abroad during the fall 2022 semester, join the Center for Education Abroad for light refreshments at a welcome-back celebration on Tuesday, January 31, from 4 to 5 p.m. in Feldman Ballroom, Wilson Commons. Join the Susan B. Anthony Center student advisory board

The Susan B. Anthony Center (SBAC) is recruiting members for its student advisory board to bring awareness to and advocate for social justice and equity. The board, made up of undergraduate and graduate students, focuses on issues that are important to the student body, including but not limited to, feminism, violence against women, women’s leadership, empowerment, LGBTQIA+ issues, marginalized groups on and off campus, and allyship. The board typically meets three times a semester and has previously worked with University departments and student groups on cosponsorships. Learn more about what the student advisory board does, and if you are interested in becoming a member, email sbac@ur.rochester.edu with your social justice interests by February 3.

Register for a class on Indigenous health disparities

There’s still time to register for “Intergenerational Trauma and the Indigenous Health Disparities that Follow,” PM491 in the Department of Public Health Sciences, School of Medicine and Dentistry. The class is taught by Dean Seneca, an epidemiologist and executive director of Seneca Scientific Solutions, and is open to graduate and undergraduate students.

Love Data Month

University of Rochester Libraries have scheduled events throughout February—and one in January—to appreciate data and help the community use and manage it better.

Mindful movement classes at the Goergen Athletic Center

Are you looking for ways to engage in mindful movement on campus? Join Zumba and yoga classes at the Goergen Athletic Center, happening weekly until the end of the semester. Classes are open to all students and Goergen Athletic Center members. Find the class schedule and register here. More classes will be added in the coming weeks, so stay up to date.

  • Vinyasa yoga—Tuesdays, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.: Vinyasa classes are a strong moving flow that cultivates balance, stability, flexibility, and vigor. Breath awareness and coordination are carried throughout the practice as the asana ebbs and flows between effort and ease. This class is suitable for all levels and prior yoga experience is not required.
  • Zumba—Tuesdays, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.: A dance-based, interval-style workout set to Latin and international music. Everything can be modified to fit your fitness level.
  • Iyengar yoga—Wednesdays, 6 to 7 p.m.: This one-hour class is formatted for the beginner or intermediate yogi. Practice inversions, standing poses, backbends, and balancing poses.

Boys and girls youth volleyball clinics

Spots remain for spring volleyball clinics for boys and girls ages 10 through 16, which will be held on Sunday, February 5, and Sunday, February 12, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Goergen Athletic Center. Study examines the genetics of iron absorption

Rochester is conducting a study with Cornell University to look at the genetics of iron status and absorption, and the gut microbiome’s involvement in how the body absorbs iron and is recruiting healthy adult men or women of East Asian or Northern European descent to participate. The study involves two visits to the University, two blood draws, consumption of an iron supplement, and answering questions about your health and diet. Individuals that complete the study will receive an analysis of their genetic ancestry and up to $30. If you are healthy, not pregnant or lactating, a non-smoker, between the ages of 18–50, and are interested in learning more, send an email, call (607) 279-0421, or fill out the contact request form.

Students from #URSimon rang in the #YearOfTheRabbit at #LunarNewYear festivities on the Rotunda organized by the Asians in America (AsIAm) club, Master’s Advisory Council (MAC), Graduate Business Council (GBC), EDI CoE and Ainslie Office of Student Engagement.

Over the weekend, students from Simon Business School rang in the Year of the Rabbit at Lunar New Year festivities in the Eisenberg Rotunda. The celebration was organized by the Asians in America club, the Master’s Advisory Council, the Graduate Business Council, the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Center of Excellence, and the Ainslie Office of Student Engagement.
