John Goldblatt remembered as skilled surgeon, sympathetic listener

John Goldblatt, a sports medicine surgeon and associate professor of orthopaedics, died suddenly on January 23 after an unforeseen illness. Colleagues say Goldblatt was well respected and loved by faculty, staff, and patients. Find remembrances of Goldblatt on the Medical Center’s intranet (University network connection or Active Directory login required). Details on a flag-lowering will be shared at a later date.

How Western tanks could bolster Ukraine’s fight against Russia

The Hill, January 25

Hein Goemans, a professor of political science and director of the Center for Conflict and Cooperation, said the tanks would be “very important” for Ukraine’s forces in the current stage of the war, which is largely stalemated in the east. “Ukraine is at a quantitative disadvantage,” he said. “Russia has more manpower, they have more military … and the tanks would make a big difference there.”

Nominations for the 2022–23 Student Life Awards

The annual Student Life Awards recognize undergraduate students in the College who—through service to others, investment of talent and time, and pursuit of excellence—have significantly and positively affected the University and surrounding community. Nominations are open through February 3. Review the available awards and submit nominations online. The awards are sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Students in the College.

LGBTQ spring social

All LGBTQ students are invited to attend the spring social to visit with other LGBTQ students and get to know the University’s LGBTQ faculty and staff. Enjoy hors d’oeuvres—including sushi—a rainbow lanyard giveaway, pronoun and pride pins, and a raffle for Meliora hats. The event is hosted by the Paul J. Burgett Intercultural Center and takes place Wednesday, February 8, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Feldman Ballroom, Douglass Commons. Students may register here; staff and faculty can register here.

Grand rounds lecture series: ‘The Anatomy of Hate’

The rise in violence fueled by hateful rhetoric is the subject of a four-part grand rounds series beginning February 8. “The Anatomy of Hate” is sponsored by the Office of Equity and Inclusion, in partnership with the Department of Health Humanities and Bioethics, the Paul M. Schyve, MD Center for Bioethics, and the Office of Alumni Relations and Constituent Engagement. Featuring virtual and in-person lectures, break-out sessions, and a documentary screening and panel discussion, participants will examine hate’s origins and be inspired to stand in solidarity against it. The series is free and registration is required.
