New method to control electron spin paves the way for efficient quantum computers

A group of Rochester researchers including John Nichol, an associate professor of physics, has outlined a new method for controlling electron spin in silicon quantum dots—tiny, nanoscale semiconductors with remarkable properties—as a way to manipulate information in a quantum system.

Take the shuttle? Get set to swipe

Starting February 1, shuttle riders will need to swipe their ID card as they board University’s shuttle buses, except for the employee Scottsville shuttle. The anonymized data sets collected will help Transportation and Parking Management analyze the supply and demand of parking and transportation on University campuses and will inform the current and future transportation needs of the University community.

Flags will be lowered for Thomas Steedle

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered Tuesday, February 7, for Thomas Steedle, a central service tech with Strong Memorial Hospital, who died on January 18. Steedle joined the University staff in 2022.

Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship deadline is February 14

The Center for Education Abroad reminds students of the opportunity to apply for the Frederick Douglass Global Fellowship, which offers a full scholarship to study abroad this summer. All program fees are covered, as well as round-trip airfare. The application deadline is February 14. In addition to the fellowship, all applicants will receive a $1,500 grant toward any Council On International Educational Exchange program whether or not they are selected for the fellowship, and the University will match the $1,500 grant. Reach out to the Education Abroad office with questions.

Workshop: ‘Conversations on Race and Poverty in Rochester’

The M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence and St. Joseph’s Neighborhood Center are facilitating an interactive workshop that will include small-group and whole-group discussions to explore the connections between race and poverty in Rochester’s community. The workshop takes place Wednesday, February 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Paul J. Burgett Intercultural Center, Douglass Commons. Learn more and register here.

Learn about submitting a standout business school application

Join members of Simon Business School’s admissions and programs team for the webinar “Tips from the Admissions Committee: How to Submit a Standout Application” on Thursday, February 2, at 5:30 p.m. EST. An admissions representative will guide prospective applicants through the application process, provide tips on constructing a competitive application, and address the most commonly asked questions about applying to Simon’s part-time programs for working professionals. As a reminder, you can apply for free to any of Simon’s programs by February 15.

Grand rounds webinar on matched birth-school data and public health and education policy questions

Attend the next public health grand rounds webinar on Friday, February 3, from noon to 1 p.m. EST. David Figlio, provost and the Gordon Fyfe Professor of Economics and Education, will present “How Population-Level Matched Birth-School Administrative Records Can Address Public Health and Education Policy Questions.” Pre-registration is required. Eastman School of Music morning chamber music series

The Eastman School of Music presents a free morning chamber music series featuring alumni guests Jeffrey Zeigler ’95E on Saturday, February 4, and Malcolm Merriweather ’10E (MM) on Saturday, March 18. Performances will take place in Hatch Recital Hall at 11 a.m.
