From Thurgood Marshall to Angela Davis, the River Campus has hosted some of the most important Black activists, authors, speakers, and leaders.

From Thurgood Marshall to Angela Davis, the University has hosted some of the most important Black activists, authors, speakers, and leaders. In celebration of Black History Month, here are profiles of some of the civil rights proponents who have visited—and their timely messages.

Eastman School alumni take home Grammy awards

Congratulations to three Eastman School of Music alumni who were winners at the 65th Grammy Awards: Renée Fleming ’83E (MM), Kevin Puts ’94E, ’99E (DMA), and Bob Ludwig ’66E, ’01E (MM).

Speaking of the Grammys, Warren Zanes ’02 (PhD), a former vice president for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, scholar, author, and musician, described the role of the awards from a musician’s and nominee’s point of view in an essay for Sunday’s edition of the New York Times.

Green comet seen from Earth for first time since Stone Age

Adam Frank, the Helen F. and Fred H. Gowen Professor of Physics and Astronomy, discusses a recently discovered green comet that passed Earth for the first time in 50,000 years. It was last visible in the night sky during the Stone Age.

Limited spaces available in the Study Zone program

Located within the Learning Center in 1-160D Dewey Hall, the Study Zone is a quiet, focused place to work. Students commit to spending at least three hours a week in the Study Zone and benefit from peer support in planning effective study sessions. By providing a productive location, personal support, and free snacks, this informal study location will help students get past common barriers to turn their academic goals into reality. Enrollment is on a first-come, first-served basis, and serves students in AS&E, the School of Medicine and Dentistry, Simon Business School, and the Warner School of Education and Human Development.

‘Future Faculty’ session on managing your scholarly identity

The “Future Faculty” workshop series is aimed at the next generation of faculty. Designed collaboratively by faculty from each of the University’s schools, this workshop aims to prepare future faculty and to give graduates an edge in the academic marketplace. Register for the next session, “Managing Your Scholarly Identity,” taking place Thursday, February 9, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. EST. The link to join will be provided upon registering.

Explore graduate programs at the Warner School

Attend an upcoming virtual information session with Warner School of Education and Human Development admissions to learn more about graduate programs in counseling, educational leadership, education policy, health professions education, higher education, human development, online teaching, program evaluation, and teaching. Sessions take place Wednesday, February 8, from noon to 1 p.m. EST and Tuesday, February 21, from 5 to 6 p.m. EST via Zoom. The next application deadline is March 1. New NSF I-Corps Interior Northeast Hub

The University is a partner in the newly established NSF I-Corps Hub: Interior Northeast (IN I-Corps). This partnership with nine other universities in the northeast region, stretching from New Hampshire to West Virginia, allows Rochester to offer entrepreneurial training opportunities to STEM researchers throughout the year. If you have been working on a technology innovation and wish to explore its commercialization potential, I-Corps can provide you with entrepreneurial education, mentoring, and up to $50,000 in funding for customer discovery.

The University is hosting its first virtual short course in partnership with the Clinical and Translational Science Institute from February 13–March 15. Apply by February 9. Interested, but can’t make that timing work? Find other upcoming courses.

Expand your nursing role with School of Nursing's RN First Assistant program 

The RN First Assistant program prepares certified perioperative nurses to take on an expanded role and empowers advanced practice registered nurses to follow their surgical patients throughout the perioperative experience. Throughout a five-week intensive course of interactive online learning activities, a day of hands-on learning and simulation, and a 200-hour clinical internship, discover how to expand the impact of your nursing practice and improve patient care. Applications for summer 2023 are due March 15.
