Message of support, resources for those affected by the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria

The Office for Global Engagement is extending its support to those impacted by the recent earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, especially those who may be here in Rochester and worried about families and loved ones in the region. The University community is here to assist you through challenging times. Here is a list of resources available to University community members coping with this tragedy. For those who wish to donate to the recovery efforts, the University’s Global Emergency Response Fund assists individuals at the University dealing with an international crisis.

Wilson Commons Student Activities honors students in campus leadership

Wilson Commons Student Activities hosted its Leadership Appreciation reception to honor and recognize student leaders and student organizations that have enriched the University’s community through their self-development, programs, publications, activities, and community service. You can find this year’s winners on the Leadership Appreciation website.

Flags will be lowered for John Goldblatt

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered Thursday, February 16, for John Goldblatt, a sports medicine surgeon and associate professor of orthopaedics, who died on January 23. Goldblatt joined the University staff in 1997.

Got research? Here are opportunities to fund and share your project

The Undergraduate Research Expo application window is now open. Students looking to present their research in a fun, University-wide setting are encouraged to apply. Submissions from students of all disciplines are welcome and are due March 15. All research done at Rochester, at another institution, over the summer, or during the academic year is welcome at the expo, which takes place Friday, April 14. All students, faculty, staff, family, and friends are welcome to attend.

The Schwartz Discover Grant application for summer research funding is also open. If you are a current undergraduate student who will be returning in the fall semester, and you are planning to do unpaid research this summer under a University supervisor, you may apply for the Schwartz Discover Grant for summer undergraduate research funding of up to $5,000. The application deadline is March 31.

Free safer sex supplies

You can have safer sex supplies delivered straight to your on-campus mailbox with the click of a few buttons. Place an order through University Health Service’s Safe Sex Express. Open to all students with an on-campus mailbox.

Health Bites webinar: Keeping children safe online

Join Well-U, UR Medicine EAP, and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children on Tuesday, February 14, at noon EST to learn about the risk factors children face while online, best practices for parents and guardians to help safeguard their children, and prevention and reporting resources. Register here.

Career Conversations workshop

The Ain Center kicks off its 2023 Career Conversations this week with Jonathan Yakubov, a data scientist with Accenture. Attend the session on Friday, February 10, at noon EST via Zoom where Yakubov will discuss his career path and work with Accenture, and answer your questions.  Email Kathy Driscoll with questions.

‘Mystery Date with a Book’

Join the Green Reps on Tuesday, February 14, from noon to 1 p.m. for “Mystery Date with a Book.” Meet in the Welles-Brown Room, Rush Rhees Library, for hot beverages and to swap gently used books. RSVP by Friday, February 10, to attend.
