Flaum Eye Institute opens new clinic in downtown Rochester
Goodwill Vision Enterprises, formerly known as the Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, and the Flaum Eye Institute will work together to improve eye care with the expansion of low-vision care within the Sterns Center for Low Vision at 500 S. Clinton Ave., and the opening of a comprehensive eye care center to serve residents of neighborhoods with limited access to this care.
Flags will be lowered for Lenora McAbrew
University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered Tuesday, February 21, for Lenora McAbrew, a COVID Screener in the Department of Phlebotomy, who died on December 28. McAbrew joined the University staff in 2021.
Drop-in Zoom counseling session today for students affected by Michigan State shootings
The University Counseling Center (UCC) is hosting a Zoom drop-in session for students, “Coping with Crises: Shooting at Michigan State University,” today, February 15, from 4 to 5 p.m. EST; the Zoom Meeting ID is 7643 051 075). As a reminder, UCC offers 24/7 crisis resources to students, with same-day appointments available for mental health crises during business hours. For after-hours options, there is UCC on-call at (585) 275-3113 with a therapist available via phone; counselor-in-residence (CIR), for students in University housing who would like to meet in-person with a crisis counselor (call UCC on-call or the Department of Public Safety to request a CIR to respond); and MySSP teletherapy service, which offers 24/7 support on-demand (chat or phone) in English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish, or French. Global Photo Contest now open
The 2023 Global Photo Contest is now open. Any student who studied abroad between fall 2021 and fall 2022 is eligible to submit up to three photos between five different categories. International students can also partake in this contest by submitting photos to the International Student Photo Contest portion, with the opportunity to submit three photos across five different categories. The deadline for submissions is March 5. Find more details online.

The Psychosis Research Group at the Medical Center is currently looking for research participants. If you have a psychiatric diagnosis, you may be eligible. While you will not be paid for joining the database, after you enroll you will be contacted about research studies where you can earn $20 to $40 per hour for most studies that you qualify for. Like most African Americans born into slavery, Frederick Douglass was never told the date of his birth, so he chose February 14 as the day to celebrate it. Douglass spent 25 years in Rochester and is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, adjacent to the University’s River Campus.
