Flags will be lowered for Clay Chapman

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered Thursday, March 2, for Clay Chapman, a cook in the Kitchen Department of Food and Nutrition Services, who died on February 7. Chapman joined the University staff in 2019.

‘Sustainability Hackathon’

Join Dining Team Green for the “Sustainability Hackathon” on Saturday, February 25, from noon to 5 p.m. in the Barbara J. Burger iZone. Participants can workshop, plan, and collaborate with a team from across the University to create sustainable solutions to an on-campus dilemma. Teams will present their ideas to a panel of judges versed in sustainability on campus. All majors are welcome and encouraged to register; snacks and coffee will be provided throughout the event.

Fall 2022 reimbursement reminder

Did you take classes at an outside college or university in fall 2022? Don’t forget to submit your supporting documentation so you can receive your reimbursement. Send your tuition bill, proof of payment, and final grades via email. Approved tuition reimbursements are typically provided within approximately two to three pay periods.

Department of Music concerts for this weekend

The Arthur Satz Department of Music will host three concerts in Strong Auditorium this weekend. On Friday, February 24, the Symphony Orchestra presents “Through Her Eyes” at 8 p.m., including a piece featuring the Eastman School of Music’s Ying Quartet. On Saturday, February 25, the Chamber Orchestra, University choirs, and Program of Dance and Movement will present “Meet Us Here” at 8 p.m. And, on Sunday, February 26, the Gospel Choir will perform at 5 p.m. All performances are free and open to all.

‘Future Space Adventures’ presentation with Hall of Fame astronaut Frederick Gregory

On Wednesday, March 1, the University community is invited to join the Student Fellowships Office and Director Belinda Redden for a presentation by Hall of Fame astronaut and former NASA Deputy Administrator Frederick Gregory. He will share his experiences logging more than 450 hours in space as a pilot on the Challenger and as a commander on Discovery and Atlantis, all part of NASA’s Space Shuttle program. The presentation is part of a visit to the University in recognition of undergraduate and current Astronaut Scholar Loren Cardani ’23. With support from a fund established by the original Mercury 7 astronauts, the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation offers competitive scholarships to outstanding undergraduate STEM majors who show initiative, creativity, and excellence in their chosen fields. The public presentation will take place at 5 p.m. in the Hawkins-Carlson Room, Rush Rhees Library. Register to attend by Tuesday, February 28, at noon EST to attend in person or virtually (a URL will be sent the day before the event.)

Request copies of research activity book for school-aged children

The Clinical and Translational Science Institute is giving away copies of Sofia Learns About Research, an activity book for elementary and middle school children explaining basic concepts of research created by the University at Buffalo’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute. Copies are available for people and programs with a connection to pediatric research or clinical care. Reach out to the Institute’s research help desk to request to have books sent to you.

24th annual diabetes conference

This year’s diabetes conference will provide primary care physicians as well as multiple levels of healthcare providers in a wide variety of other specialties with up-to-date information on diabetes research and treatment options. Topics for this year’s program focus on treating more than just dysglycemia and instead focus on the patient as a whole. Included will be working on patient feelings, behaviors, diet, exercise, weight loss medications, and social determinants of health and disparities within diabetes. The virtual conference takes place Saturday, March 25. Learn more and register here to attend.
