Iron and the brain: Where and when neurodevelopmental disabilities may begin during pregnancy

The mechanisms by which gestational iron deficiency (GID) contributes to cognitive impairment are not fully understood. The laboratory of Margot Mayer-Proschel, a professor of biomedical genetics and of neuroscience, has made significant progress in the quest to find the cellular origin of this impairment and has identified a new embryonic neuronal progenitor cell target for GID.

Online parking services will be unavailable tonight

The Department of Transportation and Parking Management’s online services will be unavailable from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8, while My Parking Online is switched from NetID login to Active Directory (AD). If you have questions or need assistance during this time, contact the Parking Office at (585) 275-4524. Your AD credentials are the same credentials you typically use to log into a Windows computer, access the University wireless network, or access enterprise services such as Microsoft 365, Workday Student, and Workday Finance. If you do not know your AD credentials, visit MyIdentity.Rochester.edu. If you do not have AD credentials, you will need to request an account by contacting the University IT Help Desk at UnivITHelp@rochester.edu.

Flags will be lowered for Kathryn Kerbs

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered Tuesday, March 14, for Kathryn Kerbs, a pacer/device technologist in the Cardiovascular Service Line Outpatient Ambulatory Care and Cardiac Care Department, who died on February 15. Kerbs joined the University staff in 2013.

Work and academic stress and resiliency workshop

Working while in school is a reality for most undergraduate and graduate students, and may cause high levels of work-related and academic stress associated with short- and long-term health consequences. The Health Promotion Office is hosting a workshop on Friday, March 17, from noon to 1:15 p.m. via Zoom to help equip you with the ability to seek solutions that mitigate stress and maximize skills leading to resiliency. This workshop is open to undergraduate and graduate students. Registration is required.

Become a University LGBTQ+ Safe Space champion

Safe Space courses are for University employees, are free, and remain virtual. Registration is now open via MyPath. The first course is “Part 1: Gaining Knowledge,” and can be found by searching for the “Safe Space Playlist.” Following the completion of this course, employees may register to complete “Part 2: Creating Safety.” Employees may then choose to become an LGBTQ+ Safe Space champion. Women in Facilities and Services deconstruct the norm

Women represent less than 10 percent of people working in construction across the United States. But their ranks are growing among the University’s Facilities and Services departments, where the percentage of women is nearly double the national average. During this year’s Women in Construction Week (March 5–11), take some time to meet some of the department’s barrier-breaking women.

LiDA colloquium on using AI tools to support students outside of courses

Student success can be supported by advances in technology even outside of instruction. In this next colloquium series session from the Center for Learning in the Digital Age (LiDA), explore what some existing AI-powered tools can do to support career services and other areas of student services, while also identifying potential problems related to data collection, sharing practices, and beyond. ‘Changing Perspectives Through the Arts’ event

The Department of Health Humanities and Bioethics presents “Drawing On and From Healthcare” with Kriota Willberg, the next installment of the “Changing Perspectives Through the Arts” series, a collaboration of the Department of Health Humanities and Bioethics, Eastman Performing Arts Medicine, and Rochester community organizations.
