ROCHESTER IN THE NEWS

The battle to boost our deep sleep—and help stop dementia

The Guardian, March 13

Doctors have long recognized the restorative properties of sleep, but it wasn’t until 2012 that Maiken Nedergaard, a professor of neurology and of neurosurgery and codirector of the Center for Translational Neuromedicine, and her colleagues identified a previously unknown plumbing system in the brain that springs to life during sleep, and enables the organ to clean itself. “Just as if you don’t have a filter in an aquarium, the fish will die in their own dirt, all this stuff accumulates in the brain that needs to be removed,” says Nedergaard.

Going Upstate exhibit in Hartnett Gallery

Curated by Kristin Doughty, an associate professor of anthropology, and Joshua Dubler, an associate professor of religion and director of the Rochester Education Justice Initiative, along with their students, Going Upstate explores how the per capita glut of prisons and jails in the Rochester area affects life in the region. Drawing on five years of research, the exhibit of images, objects, and field notes probes the prison’s footprint in “prison towns” like Auburn and Attica as well as in Rochester.

Going Upstate will be on display in the Hartnett Gallery, Wilson Commons, March 15–25, from noon to 7 p.m., except for Sunday. A public opening will take place Wednesday, March 15, from 4 to 7 p.m., and a public presentation hosted by Joan Saab, interim dean of the faculty of Arts, Sciences & Engineering, will take place at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21.
