LGBTQ+ student well-being focus group

The UHS Health Promotion Office’s Peer Health Advocate team will be collecting information on the experience of LGBTQ+ students on campus related to their mental health and well-being. Data collected will be shared with Health Promotion Office staff to help inform the development of programs, policies, and environmental-level changes to better support the University’s LGBTQ+ student population. Register on CCC to join the focus group today, March 21, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Havens Lounge, Wilson Commons. Participants will receive a $5 Starbucks coupon.

Workshop for graduate students, postdocs on navigating the job search

Sponsored by the Office of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs, the Future Faculty Workshop Series helps the next generation of faculty prepare for their academic careers. Learn how to showcase your qualifications for a competitive edge, including building a CV, preparing to interview, interviewing dos and don’ts, and proven techniques to successfully negotiate salary and employment terms in a workshop on Thursday, March 23, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Register here; a Zoom link will be provided.

Drag show fundraiser

Attend a drag show on Thursday, March 23, at 6 p.m. in the May Room, Wilson Commons, to raise awareness and donations for LGBTQ+ homeless youth in Rochester. Hosted by Wilson Commons Student Activities, the show features drag performances from both students and community professionals, light refreshments, and appetizers.

Students’ Association elections

All undergraduates in the College interested in running for president, vice-president, senate, or Class Council during this election cycle in order to hold a position next year, must submit their candidacy forms by Friday, March 24. at noon. Learn more about each position. In order to submit your form, you will first need to view the election video and pass the election quiz, which are available on the SA Government website. Voting will take place on April 3 and 4. Email sa_elections@u.rochester.edu with questions.

Sexual health presentation on BDSM

The Paul J. Burgett Intercultural Center, UHS Health Promotion Office, and the University Counseling Center are hosting a presentation and Q&A with the Rochester Kink Society about BDSM. The event will be held on Thursday, March 30, at 7:30 p.m. in Morey Hall, Room 321, and will also be streamed live via Zoom if you’d like to attend virtually. Registration is encouraged, but not required. Open to all students.

Faculty reminded to register for Commencement

Faculty are reminded that they can register for the University Commencement ceremony and all school and department graduation ceremonies on the newly launched Faculty Resource web page. The 173rd University Commencement ceremony will take place at 9 a.m. on Friday, May 12, at Fauver Stadium in the Brian F. Prince Athletic Complex. Like last year, the University-wide ceremony kicks off a full weekend of school graduations and other events to celebrate Rochester students and scholars. Dining options during Ramadan

Find residential and retail dining options at the University during Ramadan, March 22 through April 21.

Spring challenge at the Fitness Center

This four-week, team-based program is an opportunity to get in shape and establish a workout routine and helps University friends and coworkers motivate one another. Points are awarded for exercise; teams that do the best will win cash prizes. The program cost is $12.

AS&E Graduate Research Symposium is March 23

Attend the second annual AS&E Graduate Research Symposium on Thursday, March 23, from 3 to 5:30 p.m. in Feldman Ballroom, Douglass Commons. More than 70 graduate students, both master’s and PhD, from various disciplines, will showcase posters of their research and will be available to discuss their work. The event will include the Graduate Research Poster Session from 3 to 4:30 p.m. and a networking reception and awards ceremony from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. The reception will include remarks by Nick Vamivakas, AS&E dean of graduate education and postdoctoral affairs.

Concert features music of Krzysztof Komeda

The Skalny Center for Polish and Central European Studies presents the music of Krzysztof Komeda Saturday, March 25, at 7 p.m. at the Asbury First United Methodist Church in Rochester. Komeda is widely remembered as one of the immortals of Polish music and one of the founding fathers of European jazz. The free program features Dariusz Terefenko, a professor of jazz studies at the Eastman School of Music, and Stephanie Tateiwa, a New York-based saxophonist who is pursuing her bachelor of music degrees in jazz saxophone and in music teaching and learning at the Eastman School. Celebrate Graduate Student Appreciation Week, April 2–8

Dedicated to recognizing the contributions of graduate students to the campus community, Graduate Student Appreciation Week is celebrated nationally from April 2–8. The University is celebrating across all graduate schools by offering a mix of unique programming, including in-person and virtual events, happy hours, and visits to local Rochester attractions. Pizza party kickoffs at all schools across campus take place on Monday, April 3. There will also be opportunities throughout the week to showcase and share graduate student research, learn new things, get free food, and win prizes. This year, there will also be a gala event for graduate students. Find more information on upcoming events as well as special video words of support from faculty and staff across the University; check back often for updates. You can also download Zoom backgrounds and social media frames on the website to promote the week and show your support.
