University receives five-star rating for LGBTQ inclusivity

The University has scored five out of five stars on the Campus Pride Index for LGBTQ inclusivity, putting it at the top of the list among some of America’s most prestigious universities. Rochester received five stars for being LGBTQ-friendly in the areas of support and institutional commitment, academic life, housing and residence life, campus safety, and counseling and health.

New team aims to enhance the student experience

Provost David Figlio has announced a new Student Experience Team, created to build a richer and more robust student experience at Rochester by intentionally coordinating and modestly changing the current roles of existing leaders in Arts, Sciences & Engineering. Wilmot launches new smoking cessation program

Wilmot Cancer Institute’s Community Outreach, Engagement, and Disparities office has launched a new fully remote program to support smokers with quitting, using free nicotine replacement therapy medications delivered by mail, and counseling via text messaging.

Understanding the pathways and certification options to become a teacher

Understanding the process of becoming a teacher can be confusing, especially when you possess a degree outside the field of education. The Warner School of Education and Human Development offers guidance on understanding the pathways and certification options.

Flags will be lowered for Tina Crowell

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered Thursday, April 6, for Tina Crowell, a registered nurse in the Acute Care Coordinators Department, who died on March 13. Crowell joined the University staff in 2021.

Astrophysicist explains how to see ‘planetary parade’ in the night sky

“Basically, you’re going to be able to see the architecture of the solar system,” says Adam Frank, the Helen F. and Fred H. Gowen Professor of Physics and Astronomy. “You’re going to see the fact that all the planets all orbit around the sun in a giant pancake.”

Student organization Welcome Week proposals due Monday

Fall 2023 Welcome Week program proposals and interest forms for AS&E undergraduate student organizations are due Monday, April 3, by 11:59 p.m. Welcome Week opportunities include hosting a program or activity for new students or performing at select events throughout the week. Review details and complete a proposal or interest form on behalf of your organization. Contact orientation@rochester.edu with questions.

LGBTQ+ Resource Fair

Save the date for the LGBTQ+ Resource Fair on Monday, April 10, from 3 to 5 p.m. in Feldman Ballroom. Learn about on- and off-campus resources for LGBTQ+ students, take home some giveaways, and enter a raffle. Some of the organizations present include Trillium Health, Title IX, CARE Network, Planned Parenthood, and the Burgett Intercultural Center. The event is brought to you by the UHS Health Promotion Office.

Staff invited to volunteer at Commencement

Staff throughout the University community are encouraged to volunteer at the University Commencement Ceremony, which will take place in Fauver Stadium at the Brian F. Prince Athletic Complex on Friday, May 12, at 9:00 a.m. Volunteers will be a part of the excitement and have the opportunity to celebrate with the graduates. In addition to watching the commencement ceremony in person, volunteers will receive a complimentary ticket to the graduate and family food truck picnic. To learn more, including details on all the volunteer options available, sign up here. Staff should consult with their supervisor to ensure appropriate coverage in their office.

Attend SEED performances at Sloan Performing Arts Center

The Program of Dance and Movement presents its Spring Exploration and Experimental Dances—a dance concert showcasing works by students and faculty, including choreographers, lighting designers, and costume designers. Performances are Friday, March 31, and Saturday, April 1 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 2, at 2 p.m. All performances take place at Sloan Performing Arts Center. Tickets are free for University students with IDs; $12.69 for all others. The SEED concert is the finale of the three-week inspireDANCE Festival. The Richard F. Grunow Colloquium for Music Teaching, Learning and Performance welcomes Regina Carter

On Monday, April 10, at 4 p.m. in Hatch Recital Hall, the Eastman School of Music will hold the biannual Richard F. Grunow Colloquium for Music Teaching, Learning, and Performance, featuring guest speaker Regina Carter. Carter, a jazz violinist, is a recipient of the 2023 NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship, a MacArthur “Genius Grant” Fellowship, and a Doris Duke Artist Award. The presentation is free, open to the public, and will be streamed live. Note: a musical performance is not part of the event.
