Rhythmic brain activity helps to maintain temporary memories

Research from the Del Monte Institute for Neuroscience found that brain rhythms—or patterns of neuronal activity—organize the bursts of activity in the brain that maintain short-term connections.

Three weeks remain in the University’s United Way campaign. Make a donation by May 15 to help provide essential and sustaining support that nonprofit community partners can depend on and assist thousands of people in need. Have questions? Flags will be lowered for Kolja Keller

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Thursday, May 4, for Kolja Keller, a PhD candidate in the Department of Philosophy, who died on March 29.


FOR STUDENTS

Take a study break with therapy dogs

As the semester wraps up, take a break to pet some cute puppies at the Goergen Athletic Center on Monday, May 1. Therapy dogs will be there from 6 to 7:15 p.m. You can also find free Health Promotion Office goodies while supplies last.

Share your thoughts about mindfulness and yoga offerings

The Mindful University Project is seeking student input to help with the development and implementation of new mindfulness and yoga offerings for Rochester undergraduate and graduate students and is inviting you to complete this brief survey by May 5. Participation will help tailor offerings to best meet the needs of the University’s student body beginning in the fall of 2023. The survey should take less than five minutes to complete.

Learn about instructional needs survey results

The Teaching Center will present an overview of its recent instructional needs survey data and next steps on Friday, April 28, from 2 to 3:30 pm. Register to attend and contact the center with any questions.

Survey for staff who work with students

The UHS Health Promotion Office is seeking staff input to help with the development of a new training program for faculty and staff and is inviting staff to complete this brief survey by May 1. The program is designed to offer participants simple strategies they can use to navigate conversations with students who are struggling and to teach participants how to cultivate supportive environments that can enhance student well-being. The program will include a series of workshops from a variety of campus experts in the fields of student support and well-being, as well as a guidebook with expert advice, practical tools, case studies, and best practices. The training program, “Well-Being for Life and Learning Training Program,” is scheduled to launch in fall 2023.

Tuition benefits webinar

Join the Office of Total Rewards on Wednesday, May 3, at noon to learn about employee tuition benefits for attending classes at the University, tuition reimbursements for outside colleges and universities, and dependent children tuition benefits at Rochester. There will be time at the end of the presentation for questions. Register in advance to attend.

Free virtual nicotine cessation program kicks off May 4

“Why quit now?,” “Stress as a Trigger,” and “Exploring Quit Aids” are a few of the topics covered in “Commit to Quit!,” a virtual nicotine cessation group program offered by the Center for Community Health & Prevention. The free six-session series kicks off again at 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 4. Join others on their journey to quit in an interactive and encouraging environment. Learn more and register today.

Book group at the MK Gandhi Institute

The MK Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence is hosting a five-week online exploration of From Conflict to Community: Transforming Conflicts without Authorities, a book by Gwen Olton, codirector of the institute.
