Undergraduate student submissions sweep Art of Science awards
This year’s Art of Science Competition, sponsored by the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences in collaboration with River Campus Libraries, showcased the beauty of everything from camouflaged spiders to jets of high-velocity plasma. Undergraduate students’ submissions swept all of the categories, including honorable mentions. The recent discovery of a new biomarker for Parkinson’s disease emerged from the Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative, a decade-long longitudinal study led by the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research (MJFF) with support from more than 40 other organizations. Irene Richard, a professor of neurology and of psychiatry who was involved in the study at both MJFF and the Rochester site, shares why this new finding is important and what it means for future research efforts.
Book drive to benefit the Rochester Education Foundation
The Department of Public Safety is hosting its annual book drive from May 1 through June 2 to benefit the Rochester Education Foundation (REF), a nonprofit that provides students in Rochester public schools with literacy support, opportunities to explore the arts, assistance on the road to college and a career, and more. Each year, REF gives out thousands of books to area schools, teachers, and directly to students through their literacy program. Join Simon Business School for the webinar “Balancing Family, Work, and Grad School” on Tuesday, May 9, from 5 to 5:30 p.m. to learn about Simon’s part-time programs for working professionals, which offer the option for online learning and a flexible path to graduation. Alumni with work experience at the University’s Office of Disability Services, Constellation Brands, and Greater Rochester Rental Properties will share tips. Attendees of the live session will receive an application fee waiver (up to $150 value) and the recording will be available to registrants after the session.
Virtual panel: ‘The Israeli Judiciary and the Future of Israeli Democracy’
Hundreds of thousands of Israelis have participated in protests opposing a proposed overhaul of the Israeli judicial system. With the Knesset back in session, will Benjamin Netanyahu’s government attempt to enact those changes? Join the University’s Democracy Center and its panel of experts at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10, to learn how the judicial overhaul, if enacted, would alter the functioning of Israeli political institutions, and how the contest over judicial independence in Israel compares to other challenges to democracy around the world. The panel features Tom Ginsburg, a professor of international law and political science at the University of Chicago; Guy Grossman, a professor of political science at the University of Pennsylvania; and Gretchen Helmke, a professor of political science at Rochester.
