Federal funding bolsters Rochester’s development of next-generation lasers
The National Science Foundation has awarded the University a Regional Innovation Engines Development Award grant, which will bring together a variety of institutional, industrial, and business partners to lay the groundwork for establishing an innovation and economic hub built around the Science, Technology, and Engineering of Lasers and Laser Applications Research (STELLAR) in the Rochester region. Leading the effort will be Thomas Brown, the director of the Institute of Optics, and Jonathan Zuegel, a professor of optics and a distinguished scientist at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics.
Heartfelt thanks as United Way campaign wraps up
The University’s United Way campaign wraps up on May 15 and campaign leadership offers its heartfelt thanks to faculty and staff who have participated. Giving back helps local people, strengthens nonprofits, and empowers the community. Online pledging will remain available until May 31 if you haven’t had a chance to give.
Deaf-to-Deaf weight loss program helps participants lose weight
Results from a Medical Center clinical trial published in Obesity show that a specialized weight loss program designed for Deaf people by Deaf people helped participants lose weight. The Rochester Prevention Research Center: National Center for Deaf Health Research developed “Deaf Weight Wise” in partnership with the local Deaf community, adapting an existing evidence-based weight loss program for use with Deaf sign language users.

Register for the NSF CMAP Science Communications Bootcamp
Registration is open for the Center for Matter at Atomic Pressures (CMAP), an NSF Physics Frontiers Center, Science Communications Bootcamp, taking place the afternoon of May 24 and the morning of May 25. The program, geared toward STEM graduate students, postdocs, and early career researchers, is led by Corey Powell, former editor of Discover and American Scientist, founder of OpenMind, and cohost of the Science Rules podcast. Register online as soon as possible, and no later than Sunday, May 14. There is no fee to register or attend. In-person capacity is limited to the first 25 registrants and priority will be given to CMAP team members. Meals will be provided to those who attend in person. This is a hybrid program and virtual attendance is welcomed. Virtual attendees must still register online.

Pediatric Behavioral Health and Wellness team theater production information meeting
Golisano Children’s Hospital’s Pediatric Behavioral Health and Wellness team, in partnership with OFC Creations Theatre, will be staging a production of She Kills Monsters by Qui Nguyen. They are seeking high school students that are interested in theater and are either currently or formerly involved in Pediatric Behavioral Health and Wellness Services to participate. There will be an informational meeting for all interested teens and parents on Wednesday, May 17, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the clinic location at 1860 South Ave. Find more information here.

A virtual support group meets every Tuesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. (use the Zoom meeting ID 611 596 896 and password 464396) and an in-person group meets every third Tuesday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at 125 Lattimore Road, Suite 280.
