Rochester named an REU site for undergraduate semiconductor research

The National Science Foundation, in partnership with Semiconductor Research Corporation, has named the University as one of six new grant-supported Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) sites to provide undergraduate students with hands-on research opportunities in STEM priority areas related to semiconductors. The University is the only New York State institution to receive this grant, which will bolster research and development and help build the workforce in semiconductors and microelectronics in New York State and throughout the country.

Intimacy directing is making a difference on stage and beyond

On-stage intimacy work has become a pillar of the theater industry, and it’s becoming a more integral part of performances by Rochester’s International Theatre Program. Leading the program’s effort is Sara Penner, a senior lecturer of English and a voice and acting coach for the International Theatre Program. Read more about the field and how intimacy directors are shaping consent policies and practices for live theater. Margaret Hoare ’24 selected as Astronaut Scholar

Biochemistry major Margaret Hoare ’24 is one of 68 students from 46 universities across the US named a recipient of the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation Awards, given annually to undergraduate sophomores and juniors in STEM majors. The award includes scholarship funding, plus opportunities to expand professional networks to include astronauts, alumni, and industry leaders.

The application cycle for spring 2024 education abroad programs is now open. Be advised that some programs have an earlier deadline than October 1. To find a full list of abroad programs, visit the Education Abroad portal.

Writing retreat for AS&E graduate students

The Graduate Writing Project is hosting a hybrid writing retreat June 6-8, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. each day for AS&E graduate students who are working on graduate-level writing such as dissertations, theses, proposals, and publications. This structured writing experience offers guidance, accountability, and community as well as the option to work one-on-one with a writing consultant. Health care premium increase goes into effect July 1

For six months, the University has delayed premium increases that originally would have gone into effect on January 1. As a reminder, new premium rates will begin on July 1. You can review additional information on premium rate increases here, and applicable premium information here. Note that any changes to either salary or University service throughout the calendar year will not change the faculty/staff member’s salary band with regard to premium amounts within the calendar year.

Online tuition waiver application available for summer 2023

The online employee tuition waiver application for the summer 2023 semester is now open. Submit your application by logging into HRMS and following the pathway Self Service > Benefits > Tuition > Apply Employee Tuition Waiver. All applications must be received within 30 days of the course start date.
