Plate tectonics not required for the emergence of life

Plate tectonics involves the horizontal movement and interaction of large plates on the Earth’s surface. New research led by John Tarduno, the William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, indicates that mobile plate tectonics—thought to be necessary for the creation of a habitable planet—was not occurring on Earth 3.9 billion years ago.

ROCHESTER IN THE NEWS

More infants seem to be allergic to cow’s milk—but nobody really knows why

Popular Science, June 14

Giving up potentially allergenic foods, including dairy, isn’t without consequences. “I think there’s a lot of potential risk in having moms unnecessarily avoid cow’s milk or other foods,” says Amy Burris, an assistant professor of pediatrics and of medicine. “Also, you’re putting the breastfeeding relationship at risk.”

Diversity, inclusion, culture, and equity summer lecture series

The Department of Psychiatry, in partnership with the Departments of Medicine and Neurology, the School of Nursing, and the Medical Center’s Office of Equity and Inclusion, hosts the 11th annual “Summer Brown Bag Series,” an educational series focused on all facets of inequity. The sessions will offer presentations and healing practices; participants may attend virtually or in person at the School of Nursing.

The first session, “Six Hindrances to Racial Harmony,” with Ruth King, author, educator, meditation teacher, and founder of Mindful of Race Institute, will take place on Wednesday, July 12, from noon to 1 p.m. Register here.
