The hidden role of lipid droplets in fertility and beyond

Rochester researchers led by Michael Welte, a professor of biology, recently discovered that lipid droplets play a vital role during the development of eggs in fruit flies. The study shows that the droplets provide a signal that triggers cellular changes necessary for the growth of the egg—which could affect fertility in myriad organisms.

Parking permits expire June 30

Permit renewal season is here, and all current University parking permits will expire on Friday, June 30. If you did not enroll in auto renewal and would like to purchase a permit, go to My Parking Online, log in using your Active Directory username and password, and select “Get Permits.” Employees will see no increase in permit fees for the 2023–24 parking year. If you have questions or need assistance, contact the Department of Transportation and Parking Management at (585) 275-4524 or via email.

Mark Militello named University fire marshal

Mark Militello has been named the University’s fire marshal, effective July 1. He has been serving as interim fire marshal since December 2022.

Why advocates say early sign language learning for deaf children is crucial

PBS Newshour, June 17

“By the time the critical period is over, it’s very difficult to go back and fill in the gaps for their language functioning and for their everyday use of language,” says Wyatte Hall, an assistant professor of public health sciences, of obstetrics and gynecology, of pediatrics, of neurology, and at the Center for Community Health and Prevention. “There is a very powerful, a very strong structure and system, both medical and education in our country, that strongly support using spoken language only approaches.”

PhD training program on augmented and virtual reality

University PhD students from multiple departments, including biomedical engineering, brain and cognitive sciences, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, neuroscience, or optics are invited to apply for cross-training in augmented and virtual reality. The deadline for paid fellowship applications, offered to US citizens and permanent residents only, is July 25. The deadline for the general trainee program is August 15. Only a few spots remain for free registration to Wilmot cycling event

An anonymous donor contributed $10,000 to pay the registration fee for 100 University employees who sign up by July 1 for Wilmot Cancer Institute’s first-ever cycling event, the Wilmot Breakaway. The ride on Saturday, September 30, is part of the Wilmot Warrior Weekend. Riders of all levels are encouraged to join, Register online and enter the discount code URBREAKAWAY.

New tools to help implement supplier diversity in your department

The University has access to a wide range of suppliers from different backgrounds. By promoting equal opportunities, supplier diversity leads to fresh ideas, unique perspectives, and improved products and services. To help departments explore the possibilities, the University’s Supplier Diversity Program offers training through MyPath; search under the “P2P: Buying & Paying Guide Overview.” It also launched a new Supplier Diversity newsletter. These tools provide information on supplier diversity and highlight resources that can help you develop and promote the use of diverse suppliers in your department.
