How loud is too loud? Six tips to protect your hearing

Summer is the season of concerts, sporting events, fireworks shows, and music festivals. The Medical Center shares six practical tips to keep your ears safe during loud events.

Finger Lakes Health to join UR Medicine

Finger Lakes Health will officially join UR Medicine on August 1. The affiliation will maintain and expand access to high-quality health services close to home in the communities of eastern Ontario, Seneca, Yates, and Wayne counties served by Finger Lakes Health. “We are quite proud to have Finger Lakes Health join our University of Rochester community,” says President Sarah Mangelsdorf. “I want to commend Dr. Taubman and Dr. Acevedo for working together with their leadership teams to ensure continued access to the kind of high-quality medical care traditionally found in urban centers like Rochester. Their shared commitment to the residents of the region will benefit patients now and well into the future.”

River Campus ID Office reopens in Susan B. Anthony Hall

The renovated River Campus ID Office has reopened in its original location in Susan B. Anthony Halls. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Questions or requests for ID cards should be directed to rcidcard@dps.rochester.edu. This office no longer handles adding dining money to ID cards. Questions or requests for dining money should be directed to mealplans@services.rochester.edu.

University web server to undergo disaster recovery testing

From 10 p.m. on Thursday, July 13, to 1 a.m. on Friday, July 14, the main University web server that hosts several sites, including www.rochester.edu and tech.rochester.edu, will undergo regular disaster recovery testing. During this window, some sites may be unavailable for up to 30 minutes. Email UnivITWebServices@ur.rochester.edu with questions.

Childcare grant for PhD students

The University is implementing a pilot childcare grant program for fulltime PhD students on University appointments who are parents of children, newborn through age 6. The objective of this program is to provide some financial assistance to Rochester PhD students with childcare expenses. Learn more about the program including eligibility requirements, how to apply, and frequently asked questions. The fall 2023 grant cycle opens August 15 with applications due September 18 at noon. The next free “Commit to Quit!” group program, offered by the Center for Community Health & Prevention, kicks off at 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 20. Learn strategies for cutting back or quitting vaping and smoking. Join others on a similar health journey in the six-session virtual series led by certified nicotine cessation counselors. Register today.

Sign up to organize a volunteer site for Global Days of Service

Global Days of Service is an annual, worldwide effort that encourages University alumni, families, students, and friends to make a difference through a variety of Yellowjacket volunteer-led service opportunities in their local communities and beyond throughout the month of September. Do you have an idea for an in-person or virtual service opportunity? Identify an organization in need, manage the details, and rally others to join you as a site leader. Sign up to organize a project by Friday, July 28.
