Study of headlines shows media bias is growing

A team of Rochester researchers led by Jiebo Luo, a professor of computer science and the Albert Arendt Hopeman Professor of Engineering, used machine learning to analyze headlines with results showing that news stories about domestic politics and social issues are becoming increasingly polarized along ideological lines.

On display in the Department of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation until December 22, Over the Rainbow & Around the World: Real & Imagined Journeys is one of a number of current exhibits from the River Campus Libraries to offer a multidimensional view of travel.

Learning modules on rural substance use disorder

Last fall, the UR Medicine Recovery Center of Excellence held its “Taking Action Summit,” highlighting topics related to substance use disorder, stigma, and health equity in rural communities. Continuing education credits for healthcare providers are now available online at no cost through learning modules, which were recorded at the summit. Find more information here.

New instructor teaching orientation

The Teaching Center is offering a two-part new instructor teaching orientation in collaboration with the Provost’s Office and the Arts, Sciences & Engineering Deans’ Office. The orientation will serve all new AS&E instructors on multi-year contracts and all new University instructors of any rank or school on multi-year contracts who will be teaching undergraduates. Part one will be offered from 1 to 5 p.m. on July 28 or August 3; part two will be from 1 to 5:30 p.m. on August 28. Learn more and register here.

Final deadline for Simon’s part-time programs is July 15

If you’re looking to pursue a graduate business degree without putting your career on pause, consider one of Simon’s part-time programs: Executive MBA, Professional MBA, online MS in business analytics, and MS in medical management. In addition to tuition benefits, University employees are also eligible for merit-based scholarship consideration, which can help offset the remaining tuition costs after tuition benefits are applied. Classes start in August—apply for free by July 15.

Warner School hosts summer camp for young writers

The Young Writers Summer Camp welcomes youth who have a passion for writing or wish to enhance their writing skills. Hosted by the Warner School of Education and Human Development, the camp takes place August 7–11 for students in grades 6–12. Campers will learn from experienced writing teachers who will use engaging writing activities and individual and group instruction to assist them in honing their skills and exploring new genres of writing to enjoy. A discount applies for children and grandchildren of University employees and alumni, siblings of current students, and families with more than one child attending camp. Congratulations to the University's Corporate Challenge teams

More than 100 University employees participated in the annual JPMorgan Corporate Challenge held in May in downtown Rochester. All three teams placed in the top five, with the mixed gender and women’s teams winning overall, besting 192 corporate teams. The mixed gender winning team was Justin Shaffer, Erin Gibbons, Pete Sullivan, and Christina Davidson. The women’s team winners were Laura Iafrati, Rebecca Rice, Danae Polsin, and Charlotte Orzolek.
