Swapping brain cells points to new Huntington’s therapies

New research led by Steven Goldman, the Dean Zutes Chair in Biology of the Aging Brain in the Department of Neurology and codirector of the Center for Translational Neuromedicine, answers important questions about the viability of treatments that seek to replace diseased and aged cells in the central nervous system with healthy ones. The findings have implications for a number of neurological and psychiatric disorders—including Huntington’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and schizophrenia—that have been linked to glia, a population of cells that support brain health and function.

Changes coming to Outlook Web Access and MS web app login

Beginning July 26, individuals accessing Outlook Web Access and other University web-based Microsoft applications such as Teams, OneNote, Forms, and SharePoint, will see a new login page. You will no longer be able to log in with “UR\Username.” You must log in with “Username@UR.Rochester.edu.” This change does not affect Medical Center users. Find more information here.

Paxlovid is underused at nursing homes, study says

The Washington Post, July 14

The researchers said that it would be worth pausing blood thinners for a few days during a course of Paxlovid to reduce the risk of death or hospitalization from COVID-19. “Almost all nursing home residents are over the age of 50, and they have multiple chronic conditions. This is exactly the population” one “would think is the intended demographic for these types of medications,” says Brian McGarry, an assistant professor of medicine and of public health sciences.
