Summer safety reminders for beating the heat

Bonfires, pool days, lakeside vacations: it must be summer. Louis Papa, a professor of clinical medicine, shares tips for staying safe in the heat.

Flags will be lowered for Nadia Sarkis

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Thursday, July 27, for Nadia Sarkis, a financial analyst in the Department of Biomedical Genetics, who died on June 23. Sarkis joined the University staff in 2009.

Financial Health Bites webinar on buying a home

The Office of Total Rewards hosts a seminar on Wednesday, July 26, at noon on what steps you need to take in order to achieve home ownership. Topics include different loan options and how to choose a realtor. This webinar will be conducted by a representative from Citizens Bank. Register in advance to attend.

Strategic planning discussion forum this Friday

All students, faculty, and staff are invited to join a discussion forum this week to learn more about the University’s Boundless Possibility 2030 strategic plan goals and objectives, ask questions, and provide feedback. A virtual session via Zoom will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 21. No registration is required. Visit the schedule of upcoming forums.

Lecture: ‘A State of the Union for the Transgender, Nonbinary, and Gender Expansive Community’

The Department of Psychiatry, in partnership with the Departments of Medicine, Neurology, and Surgery; the School of Nursing; Wilmot Cancer Institute; and the Medical Center’s Office of Equity and Inclusion, hosts the 11th annual “Summer Brown Bag Series,” an educational series focused on all facets of inequity.

The next session, “The Politicization of Our Humanity: A State of the Union for the Transgender, Nonbinary, and Gender Expansive Community,” takes place on Wednesday, July 26, from noon to 1 p.m. with speaker Col Raimond, director of LGBTQ life and AS&E staff ombudsperson at the Paul J. Burgett Intercultural Center. Participants may attend virtually or in person at the School of Nursing. Register here.

Summer research symposium

Join the David T. Kearns Center at its Summer Research Symposium on Friday, July 28, in the Feldman Ballroom, Douglass Commons. The symposium will celebrate the accomplishments of more than 60 undergraduate research scholars who participated in a ten-week summer program at the University. Panel discussions will take place from 9:20 to 9:50 a.m. and 1:15 to 1:45 p.m.; oral presentations will take place from 10:10 to 11:15 a.m. and 1:55 to 3:10 p.m.; poster sessions will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 3:20 to 4:20 p.m.

Embrace the principles of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

In this course, presented by Franklin Covey certified instructor Michelle Lewis, participants will identify and adopt the key paradigms and principles in which The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is rooted. Find areas of work and personal life where applying these habits will improve effectiveness in things that matter the most. The next session will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 17, and Friday, August 18, in Helen Wood Hall. Learn more and register for the course.
