Medical Center researchers pave the way for new Huntington’s drug
A team of clinical researchers at the Medical Center was instrumental in the approval Friday by the Food and Drug Administration of a new drug to treat Huntington’s disease. Valbenazine is the ninth compound for neurological disorders in which the Medical Center has played a major role in the drug development process, and the third drug authorized by the agency to treat the rare, inherited neurodegenerative disorder.

“At least in terms of the more severe symptoms from the infection, it did not seem to diminish over the two-year period appreciably,” says Edward Walsh, a professor of medicine, who led the Pfizer clinical trial. “This would suggest that right now, we’re probably looking at a vaccine that is not given any more frequently than every two years.”

The Center for Professional Development at the Warner School of Education and Human Development offers a new program to benefit-eligible University employees, the “Meliora Leadership Badge Series: A Micro-Credentialing Process.”

Warner admissions will be holding an in-person drop-in Q&A session on Wednesday, August 23, from noon to 1 p.m. in LeChase Hall and a virtual session on Thursday, August 24, from 4 to 5 p.m. via Zoom. Retiree eligibility grace period reminder
A reminder that the University retiree eligibility grace period is January 1, 2021, to December 31, 2023, which was first announced in September 2020. Any faculty or staff member who meets the previous service requirements, including completion of 10 years of service, will have the opportunity to retire on or before December 31. Beginning January 1, 2024, to meet eligibility for retiree benefits, retired faculty and staff must have completed 15 years of service at the University alone or combined with service from another higher education institution. Review a recorded webinar focused on the retiree eligibility grace period or, for more information and additional eligibility requirements, visit the retiree benefits page on the Human Resources website.
