Is there a typo in the original University seal?

If the University was founded in 1850, why does the original seal display the Roman numerals MDCCCLI or 1851? Melissa Mead, the John M. and Barbara Keil University Archivist and Rochester Collections Librarian, follows a timeline of documents and decisions to find the answer in the latest issue of Rochester Review.

In today’s issue:

  • Annual training for employees on harassment and discrimination is now available in MyPath
  • Details on Demo Days in the latest myURHR update
  • Faculty and staff can register for the inaugural “Well-Being for Life and Learning” training program

AI raises complicated questions about authorship

Inside Higher Ed, August 22

“We’re wired as babies to pick up language. But what we actually pick up depends on the input that we get,” says Whitney Gegg-Harrison, an associate professor in the Writing, Speaking, and Argument Program. “Everything we have ever produced is informed by that, and we can’t point to exactly where it came from.”

FOR FACULTY AND STAFF

Getting Ready for myURHR: Readiness survey provides insight

The myURHR project team thanks every University community member who completed the myURHR readiness survey in June. The hundreds of responses and comments provided a wealth of feedback and insight into how myURHR communications are distributed and received throughout the University community. The survey results are helping guide ongoing discussions for project planning and communications to increase knowledge and engagement among faculty and staff. The next readiness survey will be available in October during Demo Days. Demo Days are a great opportunity for employees to get familiar with myURHR’s look and feel before the University’s new Human Resources information system replaces HRMS in 2024. Questions? Connect with your myURHR Champion or Super User, or email the project team.

Annual training on harassment and discrimination now available in MyPath

In pursuit of the University’s Meliora values and in compliance with state and federal law, the University requires all faculty and staff to complete annual training on how to identify and react to workplace harassment and discrimination. To fulfill this year’s requirement, Rochester will utilize the Sexual Harassment Prevention training provided by New York State. Training is now assigned in MyPath and must be completed by November 22. For more information and frequently asked questions about the training as well as additional opportunities for online and in-person training, visit the Office of Equity and Inclusion website.

‘Well-Being for Life and Learning’ training

This fall, the UHS Health Promotion Office is launching an inaugural “Well-Being for Life and Learning” training program for faculty and staff. The program will provide participants with simple strategies to create supportive environments in which students can flourish and, in turn, thrive academically. The self-paced training includes a series of required and elective workshops led by campus experts. All workshops will be offered in a hybrid format with virtual and in-person sessions throughout the semester. Once participants finish all components of the training program, they will receive a comprehensive guidebook, a sticker to place on their office door, an icon to place in their email signature, and recognition on the “Well-Being for Life and Learning” website. Find more information and register here.
