Longevity gene from naked mole rats extends lifespan of mice

Rochester researchers led by Vera Gorbunova, the Doris Johns Cherry Professor of biology and medicine, and Andrei Seluanov, a professor of biology, have successfully transferred a longevity gene from naked mole rats to mice, resulting in improved health and an extension of the mouse’s lifespan. By introducing a specific gene responsible for enhanced cellular repair and protection into mice, the scientists have opened exciting possibilities for unlocking the secrets of aging and extending human lifespan.

Pediatric decision-making recommendations empower parents, emphasize many interests affecting kids

Six new consensus recommendations—conceived by a group of medical and ethics experts led by Lainie Ross, chair of the Department of Health Humanities and Bioethics—address the question of how others should make decisions for pediatric patients.

Voting for Genesee Staff Council representatives continues through August 28

Voting for Genesee Staff Council district representatives is now open to staff in the following districts: Advancement; Arts, Sciences & Engineering; Auxiliary and Unions; Central Administration; Eastman School of Music; Laboratory for Laser Energetics; Memorial Art Gallery; School of Medicine and Dentistry Administration, Basic Sciences, and Clinical Sciences; Simon Business School; and University IT. If you are in an eligible district, you should have received your ballot via email this week. Your representative will work with staff in your district to bring concerns to the council and senior administration. Voting will close on August 28 at 11:59 p.m.

Behavioral health integration symposium

The Department of Psychiatry Collaborative Care and Wellness Division will be holding its 7th annual behavioral health integration symposium, “Behavioral Health as Population Health: Addressing Behavioral and Social Mediators of Wellbeing,” on September 29. Participants will learn about best practices for integrating behavioral health into medical care, the holistic and biopsychosocial assessment of neurological disorders, and the impact of psychological and social factors on diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. Continuing education credits are available. Register here.
