Medical Center program takes radical approach to suicide prevention in the US Air Force

A Medical Center program is taking a different approach to address suicide prevention in the US Air Force. Founded by Peter Wyman, codirector of the Center for the Study and Prevention of Suicide, the Wingman-Connect program—which harnesses the power of groups and social networks to prevent thoughts of suicide before they ever occur—is expanding to all 68 Air Force bases around the world.

In today’s issue:

  • A reminder from University IT to treat external emails with caution
  • Mindful Professor training for teaching faculty and course instructors this spring
  • Faculty, staff, and students are invited to offer input through a strategic plan awareness survey
SECURITY TIP

Be extra vigilant with [EXT] emails

With campus activities starting up again, you are likely to see increased research or employment scams or phishing. Scammers are using fake emails or signatures to appear as University employees. University IT reminds you to pay extra attention to what is in the subject line, so you don’t fall victim to these scams. Incoming emails from outside the University show [EXT] in the subject line to alert you that the message is coming from an external source and remind you to exercise appropriate caution before interacting with the message. Stop and think before you click: if it’s too good to be true, it is likely a scam. For more information, visit University IT’s external email alert web page. If you receive a suspicious email, report it immediately to abuse@rochester.edu.

FOR FACULTY AND STAFF

Mindful Professor training program

The Mindful University Project is offering Mindful Professor training for teaching faculty and course instructors at the University this spring. The program is rooted in cutting-edge research and practices and aims to offer participants a variety of tools to access ways to return to calm, be present with themselves and others, utilize mindful leadership skills, enhance teaching effectiveness, and learn what actions they can take to support students’ well-being.

The Mindful Professor Training lasts three months and includes seven hour-long workshops and two one-hour mentorship coaching sessions. Find more information and register.

FOR THE COMMUNITY

Share your input in a strategic plan awareness survey

The University values your insights and perspectives on the Boundless Possibility 2030 strategic plan and, at this time, is especially interested in assessing awareness of the strategic plan among Rochester’s community of faculty, staff, and students.

All University faculty, staff, and students are invited to participate in a survey that will take less than one minute to complete. Your responses will remain anonymous, and the information will be used to help improve communications about the plan’s goals and objectives. Access the survey here.

Make a paper quilt with the Creative Workshop at MAG

Make the Memorial Art Gallery your night-out destination with Summer Thursdays. Enjoy $5 admission, access to the museum’s world-class art collection, and a $5 discount in The Store @ MAG on any purchase of $35 or more. Admission to the Memorial Art Gallery is free for University faculty, staff, and students with a University ID.

On August 31, join the Creative Workshop to collage a paper quilt. This project is fun for artists of all ages. No sewing is necessary, but it might spark an interest in quilting in the future. Space is limited and seats are on a first-come, first-served basis.

XR Research Expo

Mary Ann Mavrinac Studio X is putting a spotlight on extended reality (XR) research at Rochester on September 15 in its first-ever XR Research Expo. Lightning talks will give you the opportunity to give a two- to five-minute presentation on your work and tabling sessions provide the space to further showcase and have conversations about your research. If you’re interested in joining the slate of presenters, fill out the presentation form by September 1. Contact Josh Jones with questions.
