Cracking the code of nutrient segregation

Rochester biologists studied the three main categories of nutrients in fruit fly eggs—protein, fat, and carbohydrates—to determine where in a developing embryo these nutrients are stored. The research provides key insights into the nutrients essential for embryo development.

Flags will be lowered for Ron Hansen

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Thursday, September 7, for Ron Hansen, the William H. Meckling Professor Emeritus of Business Administration, who died on July 5. Hansen is widely recognized for his scholarly research in drug development policy and regulation of the pharmaceutical industry. Hansen joined the Rochester faculty in 1971 as an assistant professor and director of the systems analysis program. Hansen championed the development of Simon Business School’s international business program, played a key role in launching the undergraduate business program, and served as a lead advisor to the Technical Entrepreneurship and Management MS program. As senior associate dean for faculty and research, he oversaw all faculty affairs, research, recruitment, and development, and led program concentrations in health sciences management and international management.

The University values your insights and perspectives on the Boundless Possibility 2030 strategic plan and, at this time, is especially interested in assessing awareness of the strategic plan among Rochester’s community of faculty, staff, and students.

All University faculty, staff, and students are invited to participate in a survey that will take less than one minute to complete. The survey will remain open through Friday, September 8. If you have not had a chance to participate, consider doing so this week. Your responses will remain anonymous, and the information will be used to help improve communications about the plan’s goals and objectives. Access the survey here.

THIS WEEK IN UNIVERSITY HISTORY

Partnership with East High rolls out

2015: The University’s partnership with East High went into effect as the 2015–16 school year began in the Rochester City School District. As East’s EPO, the University manages and oversees school operations. Since the creation of the partnership, East has seen a rise in the four-year graduation rate, significant drops in suspension and dropout rates, and an increase in attendance. New York State extended the partnership in 2021.
