Could artificial intelligence power the future of fusion?

With funding from the US Department of Energy, Rochester scientists led by Riccardo Betti, chief scientist at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics and the Robert L. McCrory Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, will explore how machine learning and data science can help predict, design, and improve laser-fusion implosions.

VPN requirement to access Outlook and Teams continues

For the past couple of months, users may have noticed remote access to their email and M365 Teams using a web browser requires a University VPN connection. This requirement was put in place due to a recent phishing attack that targeted the University in late May and acts as an additional layer of security protecting against potential cyberattacks. University IT shares that this VPN requirement will continue for the coming months until additional safeguards can be implemented. Find more information on how this might affect you.

Flags will be lowered for Marilyn Hurley

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Tuesday, September 12, for Marilyn Hurley, a billing manager in the registration and insurance management department, who died on August 3. Hurley joined the University staff in 1996.


FOR STUDENTS

Individual travel waiver

Have you submitted your individual travel waiver yet? Undergraduate students in the College must have a completed and approved waiver each year in order to participate in student organization activities more than 25 miles off campus. 2023–24 waivers can be submitted here and all waivers completed before today, September 6, will be entered into a drawing for one of five new limited-edition Community Weekend sweatshirts.

Free yoga classes, studio membership

This fall, the Mindful University Project will be partnering with Shine Bright, a local yoga studio, to offer yoga classes for free every day of the week at the Goergen Athletic Center. All students and R Club members will also receive a free unlimited membership to Shine Bright to access their yoga and meditation classes. Drop by for a class at the athletic center beginning September 11. Find the schedule here. To get your Shine Bright membership, stop by the athletic center’s front desk to receive the sticker for your ID. Open to all Rochester students and athletic center R Club members.

Join the Meliora Weekend fun as a student volunteer

Student volunteers play a large part in ensuring Meliora Weekend is a success by helping with onsite registration and check-in, event support, and welcoming the thousands of people who return to Rochester every year to celebrate. Connect with the campus community and enjoy the many student volunteer perks, like free swag, access to special events, and more. Sign up by September 17.

myURHR Demo Days kick off this month and all University members are invited to a live sneak peek of the new Human Resources information system replacing HRMS in 2024. There are topics for every position, so you and your colleagues can better understand the functionality, changes, benefits, and features coming with myURHR. Health Bites webinar on suicide prevention

Talk Saves Lives is the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s flagship suicide prevention education program. Join UR Medicine EAP and Well-U for a presentation about the program on Tuesday, September 12, at noon. Register here.

World Universities Network Research Development Fund 2023

The World Universities Network (WUN) Research Development Fund 2023 is now open. The annual competitive fund aims to bring together researchers to undertake innovative, high-quality, sustainable research that addresses global challenges. Each member institution can lead two proposals per year but collaborate on as many as desired. If you are interested in leading a proposal effort or would like more information, contact Megan Bennett-Spears. Review the RDF guidelines and more information on the Global Engagement website. Internal applications are due Wednesday, September 16.

Active learning teaching group

Instructors teaching a 2023 fall semester course enrolling AS&E students are invited to join an in-person Teaching Center group to explore small, easy-to-implement, evidence-based classroom activities that can be dropped into ongoing courses. Participants commit to meeting six times to read James Lang’s Small Teaching (provided), as well as trying out one of the teaching strategies once and reporting back to the group on how it worked out.  Learn more and register here.

Lifestyle benefits from Securian Financial

A suite of additional resources is available to active employees covered under the University’s life insurance plan. There is no additional fee for enrollment and programs within the plan are available to spouses, domestic partners, and insurance-eligible children. Programs for benefit-eligible employees include travel assistance services from Redpoint, legacy planning resources from Securian Financial, and beneficiary financial counseling from PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP.

The Goergen Institute for Data Science hosts “Careers in Data Science” with Ziyu Song ’20, a software engineer with Apple. This virtual career talk will be held on Friday, September 8, at 11 a.m. via Zoom.

5K to benefit brain mapping program

The third annual Rochester Head for the Cure 5K run/walk will take place at 9 a.m. in Powder Mills Park on Sunday, September 10. All proceeds benefit the University’s Brain Mapping Program and Head for the Cure’s national effort to find a cure for brain cancer. There are cash prizes for the top 8 men’s and women’s times. ‘Commit to Quit!’ starts September 14

Keeping healthy habits can be easier with support. The Center for Community Health & Prevention’s free six-session “Commit to Quit!” group program provides an interactive and encouraging environment for individuals looking to stop or cut back nicotine use. The next weekly virtual series, led by certified experts, kicks off at 5 p.m. Thursday, September 14. Register today.

Grand rounds seminar on public health in Monroe County

Attend a public health grand rounds seminar on Friday, September 15, from noon to 1 p.m. Michael Mendoza, commissioner of public health for the Monroe County Health Department, will present “Public Health in Monroe County: Learning from the Past and Preparing for the Future.” Pre-registration is required for this hybrid event. Palliative Care Collaborative Conference

The 11th annual Palliative Care Collaborative Conference of Rochester takes place Friday, October 20, and provides a wide range of updates for clinicians and ancillary professionals who care for patients and families with serious illnesses. Learn more and register here for the hybrid event.

Seminar on peer review process

The Office of the Vice President of Research announces that Noni Byrnes, director of the Center for Scientific Review at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), will be visiting the University on Monday, October 23, to share her expertise in the NIH’s peer review process. Attend the seminar in the Class of ’62 Auditorium, School of Medicine and Dentistry, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. If you are unable to attend in person, the seminar will also be streamed live via Zoom.
