Should we screen all newborns for neurodevelopmental disorders?

In a recent paper, Sarah Sobotka, an assistant professor of developmental and behavioral pediatrics, and Lainie Ross, chair of the Department of Health Humanities and Bioethics and director of the Paul M Schyve MD Center for Bioethics, recommend strategic use of neurodevelopmental disorders screening on populations of children who actually show signs of developmental delays given the shortage of genetics experts and diagnosticians in the US.

Three professors to receive Goergen Award for teaching excellence

Jack Downey, the John Henry Newman Professor of Roman Catholic Studies; Whitney Gegg-Harrison ’14 (PhD), an associate professor in the Writing, Speaking, and Argument program; and James McGrath, the William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Biomedical Engineering, are this year’s recipients of the Goergen Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching for faculty in Arts, Sciences & Engineering. They’ll be honored on October 30 at a ceremony on the River Campus.

Warner School receives NSF grant to launch the Northeast Noyce Professional Learning Network

The Warner School of Education and Human Development has received a grant from the National Science Foundation to support the creation of a regional professional learning network in the Northeast United States.

Clock ticks in Ukraine’s offensive as bad weather approaches

Hein Goemans, a professor of political science and the director of the Peter D. Watson Center for Conflict and Cooperation at Rochester, says unless Ukraine manages to reach Tokmak by late October, he expects the lines to remain in place for most of the winter. “I’m not willing to say the campaign is over, because I don’t believe it is,” he says. “They could be really close [to a breakthrough].”

Hispanic Heritage Celebration Day at MAG

The Memorial Art Gallery hosts Hispanic Heritage Celebration Day on Sunday, October 1. Enjoy free museum admission; community and cultural tables; live dances and music; performances and presentations centered on Chile, this year’s spotlight country; storytelling; arts and crafts; and more. This year’s theme is “Latinos Driving Prosperity, Power, and Progress in America”/“Latinos impulsando la prosperidad, el poder y el progreso en Estados Unidos.”

Intro to restorative circles with the Gandhi Institute

Restorative circles are a community approach to supporting those in conflict, developed in the favela shantytowns of Brazil in the mid-1990s. Join the MK Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence for an introductory, interactive weekend of demonstration and experiential learning presenting this systemic, dialogical approach to justice. The event takes place October 6–8. Learn more and register.

Roc Rainbow Rally

The University of Rochester Libraries announces the Roc Rainbow Rally, a multiday event highlighting artifacts and stories from the LGBTQ+ community, beginning October 18. One of the most exciting parts of the rally is the LGBTQ+ VR museum, the world’s first virtual reality museum dedicated to celebrating queer stories and artwork.

If you are interested in being a virtual docent, sign up for training and volunteer shifts. If you’re a member of the LGBTQ+ community and would like to help Rochester build its own LGBTQ+ VR museum, sign up to create your own 3-D digital artifact.

Pediatric Behavioral Health and Wellness theatre production

Tickets are available for Pediatric Behavioral Health and Wellness‘s production of drama-comedy She Kills Monsters at OFC Creations Theatre Center. Performances will take place October 27–29. Directed by Maggie Powell, a registered drama therapist and licensed creative arts therapist, and supported by other clinical staff, the therapeutic theater production features teens currently and formerly engaged with pediatric mental health services.
