FOR STUDENTS

‘Dysfunctional Bingo’ with the Language Center

Join the Language Center for “Dysfunctional Bingo” on Saturday, September 30, at 5:30 p.m. in the Language Center, Douglass Commons, Room 305. Participants can call a number in the language they are learning or speak at home. The remaining participants must guess or learn the numbers in different languages to fill out their bingo cards. Prizes will be awarded to the first three winners. Food and beverages will be provided.

Business and banking bootcamp

Have you ever thought about what a career in business, banking, or finance might look like? Attend an exploratory bootcamp on Sunday, October 1, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Gowen Room for an opportunity to interact with and hear from alumni across many business and banking roles. Learn useful tips related to working in business and banking, and applicable skills that can be applied to many relevant fields. No prior prep or knowledge is required, just an appetite for learning more about business and banking—and an actual appetite, as food will be provided. Register here.

Workshop on financial aid for graduate students

All enrolled AS&E graduate students seeking to learn how the Financial Aid Office operates and how it works to best support its graduate students can attend a workshop on Wednesday, October 4, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. The hybrid session will be led by financial aid counselors will lead the hybrid session and help you learn best practices for searching for alternate funding sources such as scholarships and grants, provide contact information for your financial aid counselor, and share general aid option information. The event will be held in the admissions conference room in Wallis Hall and via Zoom. Registration is required.

Workshop on effective study strategies

Join the Learning Center today, September 29, from 2 to 3 p.m. in Genesee Hall, Room 325, or via Zoom for a workshop on how to motivate students, promote effective study strategies, and humanize oneself as a professor. As a part of the Well-Being for Life and Learning Training Program, the workshop focuses on ways that professors can support their students in developing and implementing effective study strategies and covers a variety of tactics, from encouraging active learning techniques and regular review sessions to offering guidance on time management and study environments. Register in MyPath by looking up “Effective Study Strategies: Guidelines to Empower Students’ Learning Success.” Open to all faculty and course instructors.

Sessions on supporting student well-being 

Do you work directly with students and want to learn how to support their mental health and well-being? A variety of workshops are being held over the next few weeks as part of the Well-Being for Life and Learning Training Program.

  • Contemplative Classroom on Monday, October 2, from 11 a.m. to noon in Genesee Hall, Room 325
  • Compassion Fatigue: Supporting Those Who Support Others on Tuesday, October 3, from noon to 1 p.m. in Genesee Hall, Room 325
  • Keys for CARE: Connecting Students, Staff, and Faculty To a Supportive Community on Friday, October 6, from noon to 1 p.m. in Genesee Hall, Room 325
  • Educator Self-Care and Self-Compassion on Friday, October 13, from noon to 1 p.m. in Genesee Hall, Room 309

Residency events with musician and musicologist Patricia Caicedo

Musician, musicologist, and physician Patricia Caicedo, from Barcelona, will be at Rochester for a five-day residency through Monday, October 2, with several multidisciplinary events free and open to the full University community:

Lecture on the Soviet Union and the history of modern whaling

Ryan Tucker Jones, the Ann Swindells Professor of Global Environmental History at the University of Oregon, presents “Russia, the Destruction of the World’s Whales, and the Nature of the Twentieth Century” on Tuesday, October 3. The lecture runs from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Hawkins-Carlson Room, Rush Rhees Library.

Public Safety leads community donation drive for Willow Domestic Violence Center

The Department of Public Safety is partnering with the Rochester community for a donation drive in support of the Willow Domestic Violence Center. University community members can donate new or gently used items in drop-off boxes at points across the University through October 31. Requested donations are listed on Willow’s wish list. Neilly Author Series: Julius Fleming Jr.

At a time when the Black community was consistently told to be patient in their pursuit of civil rights, Black theater demonstrated a radical unwillingness to “go slow.” On Thursday, October 12, Julius Fleming Jr., an associate professor of English at the University of Maryland, College Park, will bring his theatrical lens on the civil rights movement to Rochester for a talk on his book, Black Patience: Performance, Civil Rights, and the Unfinished Project of Emancipation. Presented by the River Campus Libraries and the Frederick Douglass Institute and Department of Black Studies, the 2023–24 Neilly Series season will celebrate the inaugural year of the Department of Black Studies with talks featuring Black authors and a variety of perspectives on racism, freedom, and the Black experience.

25th annual Health Care Compliance Conference

The 25th annual Health Care Compliance Conference, presented by the Medical Center’s Office of Integrity and Compliance, will address emerging compliance program developments and risks affecting health care providers throughout the region and nationally. Keynote speakers Giovanni Gallo and Nick Gallo, co-CEOs of Ethico, will discuss the culture of compliance in today’s highly regulated world. The hybrid conference takes place on Thursday, October 26. Group fitness classes at the Goergen Athletic Center

The Department of Athletics and Recreation sponsors group fitness classes through the Intramural Sports Program every semester. The in-person classes are free for all full-time matriculated students or R Club members and take place in the Leibner-Cooper Room, Goergen Athletic Center. Current classes include bachata on Mondays from 4 to 5 p.m.; Zumba on Tuesdays from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. and Wednesdays from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m.; and Iyengar yoga on Wednesdays from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. Find a full schedule and register here.
