Meliora Weekend gets underway

Meliora Weekend kicks off today. Today’s newsletter highlights a few events that are part of the annual event, which takes place across the University through Sunday. Find registration information—and a sneak peek at the Meliora letters on the Eastman Quadrangle—below in the Social Media Spotlight.

TODAY'S UPDATES

The interpretation of information will determine Ukraine war

Hein Goemans, a professor of political science and the director of the Peter D. Watson Center for Conflict and Cooperation, argues in a coauthored opinion piece in The Economist that the war in Ukraine won’t end until Russian and Ukrainian expectations intersect.

Flags will be lowered for Dale McAdam

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Thursday, October 12, for Dale McAdam, a professor emeritus in the Department of Psychology, who died on September 19. McAdam joined the University faculty in 1967.


FOR STUDENTS

Kohn Lecture with the Speaking Fellows

Join the Speaking Fellows on Wednesday, October 11, at 7 p.m. in the Barbara J. Burger iZone for the first Kohn Lecture of the year. The first session kicks off with series namesake, Miriam Kohn ’17 and Ha Nguyen ’24. The Kohn Lectures will include time for questions and discussion following both talks.

STI testing clinics

Did you know that the most common symptom of a sexually transmitted infection is no symptoms at all? This is one reason that you should make sure that if you are sexually active, you are getting regularly tested for STIs. Sign up for an appointment at one of the UHS Health Promotion Office’s free STI testing clinics throughout the semester. These clinics are held on Mondays from noon to 3 p.m. in partnership with the Monroe County Department of Health and are open to all undergraduate and graduate students.

Free on-campus yoga classes

As of September 30, the Shine Bright yoga studios in College Town and in Victor are closed and no longer offering free classes to students and R-club members. However, classes at the Goergen Athletic Center are still offered daily throughout the fall semester, including yin, gentle flow, foundations, and power flow yoga. University Symposium: ‘American Democracy in the 21st Century’

On Friday, October 6, at 2 p.m. the Democracy Center hosts a panel of experts who will share their insights on the sources of vulnerability and resilience in American democracy today. The event takes place in Strong Auditorium; advanced registration is recommended.

Concerts celebrate Hopeman Memorial Carillon’s 50th anniversary

The Hopeman Carillon Society has a program of concerts, tours, and discussions planned during Meliora Weekend to celebrate the Hopeman Memorial Carillon’s 50th anniversary. Concerts can be attended in person on the Eastman Quadrangle or streamed live. Highlights include:

  • Friday, October 6, 5 p.m.—The carillon studio plays a concert inspired by a Friedrich Schiller poem.
  • Saturday, October 7, 12:30 p.m.—Carillonist Alex Johnson ’18 returns to play the 50th anniversary concert, focusing on repertoire associated with and written for the Hopeman Carillon.
  • Sunday, October 8, 5 p.m.—Belgian carillonist Koen Van Assche caps things off with “Two Triptychs,” a concert of piano music on carillon and several North American premieres of original carillon music.

Morning Chamber Music concert with flutist Adam Sadberry ’18E

Flutist and educator Adam Sadberry ’18E will return to Rochester as this semester’s “Morning Chamber Music” featured artist at the Eastman School of Music on Saturday, October 7, at 11:30 a.m. in Hatch Recital Hall. The program includes Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 and Valerie Coleman’s Portraits of Langston. The concert is free and open to the public

Join an HIV vaccine study

The Rochester Victory Alliance at the Medical Center is seeking healthy volunteers ages 18–50 for an upcoming HIV vaccine study. It is impossible to get HIV from the study vaccines, and volunteers are compensated up to $750 for participation.
