Message on conflict in Israel and Gaza and resources for faculty, staff, and students

A message shared yesterday from University leadership in light of recent escalations within Israel and the Gaza Strip expressed support of the Rochester community, especially for those with ties to the region and those who have lost loved ones. The message also included links to and information on numerous University resources including the Interfaith Chapel and drop-in counseling groups for students. Find the full message here.

In her research, Tricia Shalka, an associate professor at the Warner School of Education and Human Development, explores the implications of traumatic experiences on student learning and best practices for educators to help students with trauma succeed.

Rochester iGEM information session

A diverse team of undergraduate students will spend the summer of 2024 designing and building their own engineered biological system with the University’s International Genetically Engineered Machines team. iGEM projects aim to solve local, real-world problems. Students from any program are welcome to join. Participation in the project is worth eight credits, which can be used to fulfill elective requirements. Students in most biology tracks can use iGEM to replace their upper-level lab course, as well as a diversification course. iGEM team members must be enrolled in fall 2024.

Applications open for ‘America’s Got Regulatory Science Talent’ student competition

The 11th annual “America’s Got Regulatory Science Talent” student competition— scheduled for Wednesday, December 6, at noon—is accepting applications. Organized by the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, the competition aims to promote student interest in regulatory science. The winning team will meet with the FDA to present its ideas. Students matriculated at the University in any undergraduate or graduate program of study are welcome to submit a 50-word entry and provide a five-minute presentation during the competition. The proposed solution should align with the FDA Focus Areas of Regulatory Science. You can find more information about the competition here. Entry forms are due by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 8.

Supervisor Series: Recognizing stress, anxiety, and depression in the workplace

Learn about Simon’s MS in Medical Management program

Are you a medical professional considering a part-time business degree? Attend Simon Business School’s webinar today, October 10, from noon to 12:30 p.m. The MS in Medical Management program has a part-time structure, with evening and weekend courses, which allow you to maintain your career and personal commitments while building business and managerial skill sets that you can immediately apply to your current role. Soviet Self-Hatred book discussion

Eliot Borenstein, a professor of Russian and Slavic studies at New York University, gives a talk on his most recent book, Soviet Self-Hatred: The Secret Identities of Postsocialism in Contemporary Russia, today, October 10, at 5:30 p.m. in Morey Hall, Room 321.

Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day

The UR Medicine Plastic Surgery Team invites the public to its 2023 Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day on Wednesday, October 18, from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Locust Hill Country Club in Pittsford. Attendees will be able to meet the team of plastic surgeons and the director of comprehensive breast care at Pluta Cancer Center, learn about the newest advancements in breast reconstruction and hear stories from survivors about their personal journeys. Expand your nursing role with School of Nursing's RN First Assistant program

The RN First Assistant program prepares CNORs (Certified Nurse-Operating Room) to take on an expanded role and empowers APRNs (Advanced Practice Registered Nurses) to follow their surgical patients throughout the perioperative experience. Throughout a five-week intensive course of interactive online learning activities, a day and a half of hands-on learning and simulation, and a 200-hour clinical internship, discover how to expand the impact of your nursing practice and improve patient care. Irshad Altheimer, director of the Center for Public Safety Initiatives and a professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at RIT, presents “Assessing Gaps in Services for Violence Victims and How We Can Fix Them,” the next public health grand rounds webinar, on Friday, October 20, at noon.
