Genesee Staff Council elects new members, cochair

The Genesee Staff Council welcomes 28 new members and congratulates four returning members on their re-election as the council begins its fifth year at the University. This term, the council has expanded to include nonclinical full-, and part-time staff from the School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD) and the School of Nursing (SON). New and re-elected council members are: Lindsay Chasse (Advancement); Laura Ballou, Jazmin Dunham, and Ted Pagano (Arts, Sciences & Engineering); Charles LaBrake, Patrick Meagher, Rachel Stuckey, and Paul Wlosinski (Auxiliary Union); Kristi Brock, Amanda Carter, Leslie Collison, Scott Fearing, and Nate Ridley (Central Administration); Lauren Sageer (Eastman School of Music); Hannah McClow (Laboratory for Laser Energetics); Aaron Landcastle (Memorial Art Gallery); David Lanni (SON); Heidi Mergenthaler (Simon Business School); Andria Mutrie (SMD Administration); Jamie Brown, Leah Brown, and Arian Horbovetz (SMD Basic Sciences); Chennel Anderson, Rachel Bills, Marisa Chiodo, Maria Fagnano, Shari Hofmann, Austin Jackson, Lisa Smith, and Jessica Syposs (SMD Clinical Sciences); and Mary Hallinan and Marc Seigfred (University IT).

All council members recently participated in the council’s annual orientation day and attended their first regularly scheduled meeting this month. Additionally, Jane Bryant (AS&E) has been elected to serve as cochair of the council, joining current cochair, Jon Powers (AS&E). Bryant replaces Amanda Sharpe (Eastman) who has completed her term and currently serves as an ex-officio advisor. Meet the council’s representatives.

Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act

Pursuant to Section 485(g) of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, 20 U.S.C. 1092(g), (also known as the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act), the University annually publishes data on athletics participation and spending. A paper copy of the FY23 annual report is available by calling Athletics and Recreation at (585) 275-4301 and making a request. An electronic copy of the report is available online.

Webinar: National Institutes of Health tools of the trade

Mallory Waters, grants advisor and senior content director at Hanover Research, will explore various tools that are available to University faculty and other investigators considering applying to the National Institutes of Health. The webinar takes place Monday, October 16, at noon. Register to attend.

Sexual assault reporting resources

National Domestic Violence Awareness Month is recognized each October through educational events, community gatherings, and support groups. This month, the University’s Susan B. Anthony Center is launching a campaign using QR codes on coffee cup sleeves to provide easy access to essential sexual misconduct reporting resources for the University community. These QR codes lead to comprehensive guides on how to report such incidents both on and off campus, ensuring support for survivors. Coffee cup sleeves will be distributed on campus at Connections throughout the month.

Ain Center ‘Innovation Blueprint’ series session

Join the Ain Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation for its new “Innovation Blueprint” workshop series. The first session, “Eureka! The Art of Opportunity Identification,” takes place today, October 13, from 2 to 3 p.m. in Schlegel Hall, Room 301A, and focuses on identifying a promising business opportunity. Register online to attend.

Reel Minds film festival addresses social stigma of mental illness

Held in partnership with the Departments of Psychiatry, and Humanities and Bioethics, the Reel Minds Film Festival is an annual series of films, performances, and discussions addressing the social stigma of mental illness and behavioral disorders. This year’s series begins October 18 with a screening of Get to Eleven, a conversation about suicide, addiction, and the importance of sharing stories in our darkest moments, as well as a panel discussion with screenwriter Padraic Lillis and psychiatrist Deborah Healy. Toastmasters guest day

Attend a guest day with the University’s Daybreakers Toastmasters Club on Thursday, October 19, at 7:30 a.m. in the Louise Slaughter Conference Room (1-9555), Medical Center, or virtually via ZoomToastmasters is a supportive group that can help you improve your public speaking, presentation, and leadership skills. Presentation on Alzheimer's disease and prevention research

Emily Clark, associate director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Care, Research and Education Program, on Thursday, October 19, for a presentation about Alzheimer’s disease, research developments, and prevention research opportunities. The lecture takes place at 1 p.m. in the Science Parkway Building. Registration is required as space is limited. Call (585) 602-5200, or email adcare@urmc.rochester.edu to register.

Relax and Renew retreat

Relax and Renew retreats are half-day, silent meditation retreats for students, faculty, and staff who are interested in a more immersive meditation experience. On Saturday, October 28, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Spurrier Dance Studio, participants will experience four hours of noble silence while engaging in a variety of contemplative practices. The retreat is free of charge and open to all members of the University community. Registration required.

Conference, concert on equity and inclusion in music

Eastman School of Music will host its inaugural Context Conference, Contextualizing Equity and Inclusion in Music, November 3–4. The conference concludes with “Classics with a Twist,” an immersive, kaleidoscope-style concert at the Memorial Art Gallery on November 4 at 7:30 p.m. Register to attend the conference online through October 25. The “Classics with a Twist” concert is free and open to the public, but advanced registration is required by Sunday, October 15, or until capacity is reached. (Those not attending the conference should select “Attending Classics with a Twist Only” when registering.)

Translational Research Day

Translational Research Day is an annual celebration of innovative research supported by the Clinical and Translational Science Institute. This year it takes place on Monday, November 13, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Researchers of all levels of experience are invited to attend, especially those interested in grant opportunities, professional development, and collaboration in the field of translational research.
