Photonic chips could give drones a lift when GPS is unavailable

With a grant from the National Science Foundation, Rochester researchers led by Jaime Cardenas, an associate professor at the Institute of Optics, are developing photonic chips that could replace the gyroscopes currently used in unmanned aerial vehicles or drones, enabling them to fly where GPS signals are jammed or unavailable.

Intro to Digital Accessibility for Content Creators sessions

This virtual session will teach learners about the importance of digital accessibility and provide the necessary foundation to make content accessible. Learn basic techniques that creators and editors can use to ensure their digital content works well for people with disabilities, meets accessibility standards, is usable for all, and achieves its goals. Training is for anyone at the University involved in developing, editing, or publishing digital content, regardless of their role. Sessions take place the first Thursday of each month beginning November 2. Registration is required. Email digitalaccessibility@rochester.edu with questions.

Sound bath meditative experience in Flaum Atrium

OSSIA New Music, in collaboration with Eastman Performing Arts Medicine, will offer a sound bath meditative experience today, October 17, from 3 to 5 p.m., for employees, faculty, and students walking through Sarah Flaum Atrium in the School of Medicine and Dentistry. The listener is invited to enter, leave, and move around the space freely, taking up different vantage points to create their own listening experience. Learn more about the performance.

Free tickets to Gateways Music Festival, details on pre-concert reception

Members of the University community can attend Gateways Music Festival concerts and events starting this week. Below are codes to access free tickets to several of the festival’s events. Ticket availability for certain events is limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis​​​​​​. There is no discount for the Gateways Chamber Players but tickets can be purchased via Eastman box office.

You can also attend a pre-concert reception with hearty hors d’oeuvres and an open beer and wine bar in the Max of Eastman Place atrium on Friday, October 20, at 5:30 p.m., preceding the final concert of the festival in Eastman’s Kilbourn Hall at 7:30 p.m. Those who have tickets may register for the reception for $10; otherwise, advanced registration is required at $30 per ticket, which grants access to both the pre-concert reception and performance. NYS Office of Language Access listening tour session today

In partnership with the University’s Office of Government and Community Relations, the New York State Office of Language Access will host a listening session today, October 17, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Memorial Art Gallery. The office hopes to receive feedback from residents, organizations, HR experts, clinicians, students, and those concerned or who have had to navigate language access services in Monroe County or across New York State. The Office of Language Access provides critical oversight and coordination across state agencies to ensure that the statewide language access policy is implemented efficiently and effectively.

Simon Games information session

If you’re interested in Simon Business School’s full-time MBA program, one of the full-time MS programs, or January entry to the Professional MBA program, play Simon Games. The business simulation not only gives participants a taste of business school through experiential learning but also allows prospective students to compete for a full-tuition scholarship. Attend an information session on Thursday, October 19, from noon to 12:30 p.m. to learn more. AS&E Graduate Research Day is October 20

Graduate students across Arts, Sciences & Engineering will showcase their research at Graduate Research Day on Friday, October 20, in Feldman Ballroom, Douglass Commons. Stop by anytime during the event and stay for as many of the talks as you would like. Roundtable discussions take place from 9 to 10 a.m. with research talks starting at 10 a.m. A networking reception and awards ceremony follow from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Free coffee, drinks, and light refreshments will be available during the roundtable discussions and the networking reception.

Attend the South Asian Expo

ADITI (Association for the Development of Interest in the Indian Subcontinent) is hosting its annual fall event, the South Asian Expo, on Saturday, October 21, from noon to 3 in Hirst Lounge, Wilson Commons. The event celebrates the heritage and traditions of South Asian countries. Stop by to create crafts, learn facts about the countries, enjoy some free food, and watch performances.

Book Group: How to Have Antiracist Conversations

Join the MK Gandhi Center for Nonviolence for a four-week online book group, centered on Roxy Manning’s How to Have Antiracist Conversations: Embracing Our Full Humanity to Challenge White Supremacy. Meetings take place on Mondays, October 23 through November 13, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Learn more and register to attend.
