What to expect at a mammogram

If you’re preparing for your first mammogram, or are curious about the procedure, Avice O’Connell, a professor of imaging sciences and director of Women’s Imaging, offers guidance on what to expect during the process.

Walk and unwind

On Wednesday, October 25, at 5 p.m., take a one-hour walk to help you unwind and experience the sights, sounds, smells, and textures of autumn at Rochester. Your guide will use a series of short activities and breathing exercises to help awaken the senses and ease into the present moment. It is not a long-distance walk. Comfortable shoes and an appropriate outdoor coat for the weather are all you need. Open to all undergraduate and graduate students. Registration is required; sign up here.

Lifelong dietary tips from Well-U

In Well-U’s Nutrition Basics, starting on Friday, October 20, at noon, learn from a lifestyle management dietitian how to make proteins, carbs, and other nutrients work for and not against you. Enroll now.

Updating your beneficiaries

Retirement plan assets are transferred according to the terms of your plan’s beneficiary designation, rather than by the terms of your will. Make sure your beneficiary information reflects your current wishes. Go to TIAA to register or log in to your account. Once logged in, under the “Actions” tab, choose “Add/Edit Beneficiaries.” From there, you can designate beneficiaries and select how much each should receive.

Roc Rainbow Rally starts today

The University of Rochester Libraries’ Roc Rainbow Rally starts today, October 18. A multiday event, the rally will highlight artifacts and stories from the LGBTQ+ community, beginning with the panel discussion “From Shared Experiences to Shared Collection: Building Analog and Virtual Queer Spaces” at 6 p.m. in the Hawkins-Carlson Room of Rush Rhees Library.

You will also have multiple opportunities to visit the LGBTQ+ VR museum, the world’s first virtual reality museum dedicated to celebrating queer stories and artwork. For all talks and activities, visit the full schedule.

‘One Language, One Recipe’ cooking demonstration

The Language Center, together with the Program in American Sign Language, will host its “One Language, One Recipe” event on Friday, October 20, from noon to 1 p.m. in the Community Kitchen, Douglass Commons. Learn more here.

Research talk: ‘Air Pollution and Climate Change: Big Problems with Big Data’

Join the Goergen Institute for Data Science for Air Pollution and Climate Change: Big Problems with Big Data, with Lee Murray, an associate professor of earth and environmental sciences. The research talk will be held on Friday, October 20, at 2 p.m. in Wegmans Hall, Room 1400. A Zoom link is available for virtual attendees.

Get ‘Comfy for a Cause’

The fifth annual “Comfy for a Cause” campaign is underway with options to purchase comfy gear to support the Student Emergency Fund or Global Emergency Response Fund. Each purchase includes a $15 donation to provide financial assistance to students dealing with hardship or to members of our community impacted by a global crisis. Seminar on the peer review process

Noni Byrnes, director of the Center for Scientific Review at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), will be visiting the University on Monday, October 23, to share her expertise in the NIH’s peer review process. Attend the seminar in the Class of ’62 Auditorium (G-9425), School of Medicine and Dentistry, from 10:30 a.m. to noon. If you are unable to attend in person, the seminar will also be streamed live via Zoom. If you attend in person, there is no need to register. If you plan to attend via Zoom, register here.

Learn how to use Blender

Don’t be the only person not celebrating Halloween in the Metaverse. Take Blender 101: Spooky Season Edition with Mary Ann Mavrinac Studio X. On Monday, October 23, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Studio X staff will hold a beginner-level workshop for Blender, an open-source 3-D modeling software that has become the industry standard. Learn how to navigate the Blender workspace, tools, and hotkeys, and create your own low-polygon character. Register to attend.

iZone grants for students, alumni

Do you have an early-stage idea? An innovative project, creative venture, or policy research that you want to launch? The “Make It Happen” grant awarded by the Barbara J. Burger iZone provides individuals and groups with up to $1,500 in funding to help bring their ideas to life. Applications are due by October 27 at 11:59 p.m. and will be accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis until then. All current University students and alumni are eligible to apply; students may apply as an individual or as a group.

Pediatric Behavioral Health and Wellness theater production

Tickets are available for Pediatric Behavioral Health and Wellness’s production of the drama-comedy She Kills Monsters taking place October 27–29 at OFC Creations Theatre Center. Directed by Maggie Powell, a registered drama therapist and licensed creative arts therapist, and supported by other clinical staff, the therapeutic theater production features teens currently and formerly engaged with pediatric mental health services. Youth artwork will be featured in the lobby in an accompanying art show Purchase tickets here.
