Flags will be lowered for Charles Manning

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Tuesday, October 24, for Charles Manning, a social worker in the Strong Memorial Hospital Psychiatry Social Work Department, who died on September 29. Manning joined the University staff in 1999.

Camaraderie and visibility: A festival for Black classical musicians

The New York Times, October 18

The impetus for Gateways Music Festival, says Lee Koonce, the festival’s president and artistic director, came when Armenta Hummings Dumisani, a Juilliard-trained pianist, set out to provide her eldest son, Amadi Azikiwe, now a renowned violist, with opportunities she had been denied. “She said, if I bring together a group of Black musicians at his level and make it into a festival, he will not experience the isolation that I experienced.”

Celebrate National Transfer Student Week today, October 19, in Havens Lounge from 3 to 5:30 p.m. All students are welcome to attend. The event is sponsored by the College Center for Advising Services, the Hajim School of Engineering, and the Transfer Student Organization.

‘Pie and Stories: A Marketing and Creative Roundtable’

Are you curious about different creative jobs and how you might use your skills after college? Join the Greene Center today, October 19, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Humanities Center, Conference Room D, for stories from alumni from a variety of backgrounds including writing, editing, marketing, and music, and learn how you can pursue a career that incorporates your creative expertise and interests. Student mindfulness facilitator training

The Mindful University Project is currently recruiting students to become student mindfulness facilitators, a position designed for students who are passionate about meditation and interested in sharing their practice with others on campus. Attend a training session on Thursday, November 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Humanities Center, Conference Room A. You can receive Level 1 Medallion credit by participating and Level 2 when leading mindfulness sessions. Open to all undergraduate and graduate students. Registration is required.

Virtual Career Conversation: Marc Haddad

The Ain Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation is hosting a virtual Career Conversation with Marc Haddad ’21, ’22 (MS TEAM), a product certification engineer with Amogy, on Friday, October 20, from noon to 1 p.m. via Zoom. Amogy is developing a clean energy solution that is affordable, accessible, and storable and is working to enable the transportation industry to decarbonize by 2050. Questions for Haddad are welcome and encouraged. Register for the link to attend.

Community roundtables with the Gandhi Center

Join the MK Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence for a community empowerment series rooted in essential dialogues. “Rochester Roundtables: Walk the Talk” is focused on bringing together generations to draw on collective wisdom toward naming, understanding, and galvanizing around issues that are critical to the community. The next session takes place Saturday, October 21, at 11 a.m.

Lecture on artistry and activism with Catherine Filloux

Award-winning playwright, librettist, and activist Catherine Filloux talks about her career and the strategies she’s nurtured, the experience she’s gained, and the lessons she’s learned combining artistry and activism on Monday, October 23, at 5 p.m. in the Humanities Center, Conference Room D. Learn more about the lecture.

Ask Security Anything session

University IT and ISD invite faculty, staff, and students to join the next Ask Security Anything Zoom session on Tuesday, October 24, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Topics of discussion include IAM (which covers identities, accounts, multifactor authentication, and email), risk and compliance (third-party assessments, risk assessments, policies, and affiliate security), and security aspects of Memo33.

Do you have a cybersecurity question or topic you’d like to discuss, but don’t see it listed on the agenda? That’s okay; participants are encouraged to bring any and all questions related to cybersecurity. Registration is not required for this event. Add the Zoom session to your calendar.

New Vape Escape program supports teens

Vape Escape, a free five-session series offered virtually by the Center for Community Health & Prevention, provides support for youth ages 12 to 18 looking to quit or cut back on vaping. The first session starts at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, October 25. Doctors and lifestyle counselors from the center will meet with interested teens in a casual and supportive group setting. The program is flexible. Interested participants can attend one session or all. Registration is required. Relax and Renew Retreats

Relax and Renew Retreats are half-day, silent meditation retreats for students, faculty, and staff who are interested in a more immersive meditation experience. On Saturday, October 28, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Spurrier Dance Studio, participants will experience four hours of noble silence while engaging in a variety of contemplative practices. Retreats are free of charge and open to all members of the University community. Sign up here. Registration is required.

International Education Week grant proposals

International Education Week (IEW) is November 13–18. The International Services Office IEW grant funds programming during the week that celebrates the benefits of international education. This includes lectures and programs that highlight international academic programs and research, in addition to those that encourage the integration of the University’s domestic and international student body. Grants of up to $500 will be awarded to students and departments University-wide. Submit your proposal by Tuesday, October 31, and stay tuned for IEW programming details.
