Scientists propose super-bright light sources powered by quasiparticles

An international team of scientists including John Palastro, a senior scientist at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering, and an associate professor at the Institute of Optics, is rethinking the basic principles of radiation physics with the aim of creating super-bright light sources.

Rite Aid’s bankruptcy reflects how much the corner drugstore has changed

“Rite Aid, at least in our region, has been one of the pharmacy chains that tended to maintain a presence in underserved communities,” says Curtis Haas, chief pharmacy officer. Rite Aid hasn’t announced yet which of its stores will be closing but, Haas says, “I think you’ll see contraction in the traditional, you know, every corner having a pharmacy kind of things that we’ve gotten used to something that’s going to look quite a bit different.” Which he says could also make things more difficult for some communities to get access to their medicines.

UCC offering drop-in counseling sessions today

In recognition of the grief and anxiety many students from a wide range of backgrounds are experiencing with the war happening in Israel and Gaza, the University Counseling Center (UCC) will hold two virtual drop-in group sessions today, October 20, for students needing support. Grief for Israel will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. Grief for Gaza will be held from 4 to 5 p.m.

Find research opportunities, resources during Undergraduate Research Week

Join the Office for Undergraduate Research for Undergraduate Research Week, October 20–27. Find a full week of research-related events providing local, discipline-specific guidance about getting started in undergraduate research. The week culminates in the Undergraduate Research Fair on Friday, October 27, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Goergen Athletic Center Field House. Tables will be populated by knowledgeable experts from many departments and programs who can answer questions concerning undergraduate research in that discipline.

Introducing ‘DEI Content Anytime’

The Office of Human Resources’ Learning and Development department, in collaboration with the Office of Equity and Inclusion, introduces “DEI Content Anytime,” offering learning opportunities on diversity, equity, and inclusion via MyPath. Accessible to all faculty and staff, this educational content aligns with the University’s Meliora values. The newest learning opportunity highlights neurodiversity; new modules on a variety of DEI topics will be released regularly. Resources include brief micro-learning modules and departmental book club options. For more information, visit the HR website.

Homeownership incentive program

Strategic planning discussion forum today

All students, faculty, and staff are invited to join a discussion forum today, October 20, at noon to learn more about the University’s Boundless Possibility 2030 strategic plan, ask questions, and provide feedback. The session will be led by members of the strategic plan implementation team. It’s free and open to all but registration is required.

Research talk: ‘Air Pollution and Climate Change: Big Problems with Big Data’

Join the Goergen Institute for Data Science for Air Pollution and Climate Change: Big Problems with Big Data, with Lee Murray, an associate professor of earth and environmental sciences. The research talk will be held on Friday, October 20, at 2 p.m. in Wegmans Hall, Room 1400. A Zoom link is available for virtual attendees.

Just a few days left to get Comfy for a Cause

Garden work parties at the MK Gandhi Institute

Drop by the community garden at the MK Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence any time between 1 and 3 p.m. on Saturdays through November to help plant, tend, and harvest food and flowers. The institute is also looking for volunteers who can help pack and deliver grocery bags to neighbors. Wear casual clothes and closed-toe shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Tools and gloves will be provided.

Reel Minds film festival addresses social stigma of mental illness

Held in partnership with the Department of Psychiatry and the Department of Humanities and Bioethics, the Reel Minds Film Festival is an annual series of films, performances, and discussions addressing the social stigma of mental illness and behavioral disorders. The festival concludes on October 25 with the US premiere of Daughters  and a panel discussion. Learn more and purchase tickets.
