Nominations open for 2024 Presidential Stronger as One Diversity Awards

The Office of Equity and Inclusion is accepting nominations for the 2024 Presidential Stronger as One Diversity Awards. The awards recognize faculty, students, and staff, as well as a University trustee and a Rochester community organization, who have supported equity and inclusion at the University and in the community. Submit a nomination by November 17. Email equityandinclusion@rochester.edu for more information.

Professors of religion, writing, and biomedical engineering recognized for teaching excellence

Jack Downey, the John Henry Newman Chair in Roman Catholic Studies in the Department of Religion and Classics; Whitney Gegg-Harrison ’14 (PhD), an associate professor with the Writing, Speaking, and Argument Program; and James McGrath, a professor of biomedical engineering, are the recipients of the 2023 Goergen Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in Arts, Sciences & Engineering. The recipients will be honored on Monday, October 30, with a ceremony in Feldman Ballroom, Douglass Commons.

Student mindfulness facilitator training

The Mindful University Project is recruiting students to become student mindfulness facilitators, a position designed for students who are passionate about meditation and interested in sharing their practice with others on campus. Attend a training session on Thursday, November 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Humanities Center, Conference Room A. You can receive Level 1 Medallion credit by participating and Level 2 when leading mindfulness sessions. Open to all undergraduate and graduate students. Registration is required.

Sex Ed 101 online program

Do you feel like you didn’t learn enough about sexual health before coming to the University or in your time spent here already? Join the Health Promotion Office’s online program, Sex Ed 101, and learn the basics of sexual health over the course of 21 days. Join at any time.

Learning Center offers strategies for pre- and post-reading

Which parts of a lecture should you take notes on? Do you know how to prepare for a class, or how to engage with class materials during your own study time? Cultivating successful study skills can be a challenge, but the Learning Center is here to provide support. In this blog post, explore the concepts of pre-reading and post-reading, and how they benefit your academic experience.

Register for the Mindful Practice in Medicine facilitator training workshop

Participate in this five-day, retreat-like workshop to advance your teaching skills and energize your clinical work through greater attentiveness, self-awareness, teamwork, and self-monitoring in stressful and demanding clinical situations. Learn more about and register for the workshop, which was developed by physicians. The workshop takes place November 7–11 at the Chapin Mill Retreat Center in Batavia.

VSP Vision Care reminder

If you are currently enrolled in VSP Vision Care, don’t forget to take advantage of this benefit during the calendar year. You don’t need a card to utilize your benefits. At your eye care appointment, simply tell them your VSP ID number, which is 3 zeros, followed by your employee ID number. For more information about your coverage, visit the Total Rewards website.

Nurse and APP participation sought for survey

The Department of Health Humanities and Bioethics, in collaboration with nursing and advance practice provider (APP) leadership, wants to know nurse and APP perceptions on the ethical climate of their work settings. Your anonymous feedback will help develop and target strategic initiatives for ethics education and deliberation. This QI project aligns with the institutional goal to nurture work environments to fulfill the promise of the ICARE values. Take the survey.

Join the Language Center for mocktails and explore ways to incorporate language learning into your academics. The happy hour takes place today, October 26, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Welles-Brown Room, Rush Rhees Library.

Scare Fair 2023: ‘Haunted Library’

The River Campus Libraries invites you to an afternoon of eerie festivities in Rush Rhees Library for this year’s Scare Fair, Friday, October 27, from 1 to 4 p.m. Complete the library’s scavenger hunt and ascend to the top of the Rush Rhees Library tower. Tower tour/scavenger hunt tickets are limited and will be made available to the first 300 adventure seekers. (Please note: tower access is weather-dependent). Other attractions include free fall snacks, therapy dogs in the Welles-Brown Room, games, performances, and the chance to win prizes.

In coordination with Scare Fair, the Hopeman Memorial Carillon will bring to life the haunting sounds of The Bells by Edgar Allan Poe. Listen from the Eastman Quadrangle.

Innovation Blueprint workshop

Join the Ain Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation for the next session of its “Innovation Blueprint” workshop series, which takes you through the innovation process. “Unlocking Potential: The Business Model Canvas” takes place Friday, October 27, from 2 to 3 p.m. in Schlegel Hall, Room 301A. Network at Club Rochester

The All-Campus Judicial Council is sponsoring Club Rochester on Friday, October 27, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the Feldman Ballroom as part of its “Know UR Rights” campaign. Meet, network, and ask questions of representatives from departments across campus who want you to know the rights and resources available. Food and drinks will be provided. The bar is available to those age 21 and over.

Equity-focused dissemination and implementation seminar

Register for the first Equity-Focused Dissemination and Implementation
fall seminar, “Collaborating on Planning Equity-Focused Research to Advance Young Adolescents’ Sexual Health Development Support in Rochester, NY,” presented by Sadandaula Rose Muheriwa, a postdoctoral research associate at the School of Nursing. The virtual seminar takes place on Tuesday, October 31, from 4 to 5 p.m. Register here.

Support the UR Medicine Food Pantry at the East Avenue Grocery Run

The UR Medicine Food Pantry is once again participating in the annual East Avenue Grocery Run to raise money in support of Rochester-area pantries on Saturday, November 4. Join the pantry’s team to either run or stroll, in-person or virtually, a 10K, 5K, or one-mile route. Your registration fee will go directly to the pantry and help stock shelves this winter for patients with urgent food needs. You can also donate directly to the pantry. Visit www.groceryrun.org for more event details. Email Kerrie Merz with questions or if you’re interested in volunteering the morning of the event.
