TODAY'S UPDATES

New University password change procedure

Due to the ongoing rise of cyber threats, it is imperative to modernize the existing University password modification process. In response to this issue and to align with established security protocols, University IT is introducing a new procedure and approach that mandates all faculty, staff, and students to update their Active Directory password on an annual basis. While this revised process may cause some disruptions, it is an essential step in safeguarding collective information assets.

Beginning November 1, anyone who has not completed a password change of their Active Directory credentials in the past 365 days will receive emails to prompt a password change. This email will not contain a link to redirect you—like what you may see in a phishing email—but instead will direct you to tech.rochester.edu for instructions to change your password. Find more information here.

FOR STUDENTS

Register for the Creative Collision Challenge

Registration is now open for the Creative Collision Challenge, hosted by the Ain Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. This one-day competition brings together students from diverse backgrounds and programs to brainstorm solutions for social and cultural issues. Teams are guided by mentors and experts to devise an action plan, which is then presented to a panel of judges. Top teams will earn cash prizes.

The competition is open to all Rochester undergraduate and graduate students from any school, program, and class year, and takes place Friday, November 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Rettner Hall, Room 307. Lunch will be provided. Register online by November 2. More information will be available soon. Students will receive their team assignments and the problem statement the night before the competition. Contact Heidi Mergenthaler with questions.

Assessing the use of AI tools for AS&E students

Last week, the International Center for Academic Integrity celebrated its annual International Day of Action with the theme “Championing Integrity in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.” In celebration of the day, the honesty liaisons and the All-Campus Judicial Council are putting up posters on campus to remind members of the University community about the importance of excelling with integrity when it comes to exams, group projects, and writing papers. To help determine if the use of artificial intelligence tools is permitted or prohibited in a given course, the council and the honesty liaisons remind AS&E students to read course documents, including syllabi, carefully; check with instructors and save their answers in writing; and ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is the tool doing something for me that will be assessed as part of course learning outcomes? If it is, proceed with caution. Or, better yet, don’t use it until you ask.
  • Do I know if the tool has been explicitly permitted or encouraged by my course instructor? If it hasn’t, or if you’re not 100 percent sure, don’t use it until you ask.
