Empowering education: Impactful partnerships drive change in K-12 schools

Valerie Marsh, an associate professor at the Warner School of Education and Human Development, is collaborating with educators in K–12 schools to drive organizational and cultural transformations that directly enhance student outcomes.

Drop-in counseling groups

The University Counseling Center (UCC) will provide virtual spaces for students on Tuesday, November 21, for a range of concerns students are dealing with during the upcoming holiday week.

• Dealing with Antisemitism, noon
• Dealing with Islamophobia, 2 p.m.
• Our Healing Breath, for Black-identified students led by Black-identified therapists, 3 p.m.

For students who prefer individualized support, UCC has same-day appointments available for urgent needs; after-hours on-call and in-person support, both accessed by calling (585) 275-3113; and on-demand support 24/7 through TELUS (students have free access by downloading the app to their phone).

AS&E graduate student writing retreat

The Graduate Writing Project is hosting an in-person writing retreat on November 25 and 26, from 9 a.m. to noon each day. Writing Retreats are designed for AS&E graduate students who are working on graduate-level writing such as dissertations, theses, proposals, and publications. The structured writing experience offers guidance, accountability, and community as well as the option to work one-on-one with a writing consultant. Register online. Email Emily Lowman with questions.

Data visualization competition

If you recently used graphics—such as charts, maps, graphs, or animations—to represent data for a project, then you created a submission-worthy piece for the River Campus Libraries’ Data Visualization Competition, part of the Data Bloom series. Submissions will be accepted from Monday, November 27, to Wednesday, December 22. The best visualizations from undergraduate and graduate students and the visualization that receives the “People’s Choice Award” will receive a prize worth $100. Financial Health Bites webinar on homeownership program

Join the Office of Total Rewards for a webinar on Tuesday, November 28, at noon to learn about the Homeownership Incentive Program. Benefit-eligible faculty, staff, residents, and fellows can receive $9,000 toward the purchase of a primary residence. This is a joint program among the University, the City of Rochester, and several participating banks and credit unions. Register online to attend.

Assistance for researchers partnering with a University startup

The University is providing an ongoing opportunity for grant writing and consulting assistance to Rochester researchers who are planning to partner with a University startup to develop and submit a Small Business Innovation Research or Small Business Technology Transfer proposal. Preschool openings at the University’s on-site daycare

The Children’s School at URMC currently has a few select openings in their preschool rooms for children ages 3 and 4. Operated by KinderCare Learning Centers and located on Castleman Road, the daycare prioritizes University employees, providing them with priority placement and a 10 percent tuition discount. First academic building dedicated

1861: The University’s first academic building on the Prince Street Campus was dedicated on November 23 and named Anderson Hall, after Rochester’s first president, Martin Brewer Anderson, who served from 1853 to 1888. It took two years to construct, and when Anderson Hall finally opened its doors, there were 155 students and 6 professors at the University.

The Artful Unwind is the first-of-its-kind juried staff art show, running in the Hartnett Gallery, Wilson Commons, through January 7. From computer programmers who are also painters to librarians who are also sculptors, the exhibit celebrates the diverse artistic talents of more than 40 staff members from across the University.
